Living Single is a five-season American television sitcom created by Yvette Lee Bowser that aired on Fox from August 22, 1993, to January 1, 1998. The show followed the lives of six friends who shared personal and professional experiences while living in a brownstone in Brooklyn. There is no better duo than Erica Alexander and T.C. Carson from Living Single. I’ll be patient.
Maxine Shaw and Kyle Barker were the will-they-won’t-they duos that primetime television didn’t know it needed in the 1990s. We loved that they spent years roasting each other only to end up together in the end. However, their love story came to an abrupt end when Kyle left the show in Season 5.
Kyle, the show’s secondary protagonist, is a witty investment banker and a successful accountant with a sense of style on Living Single. He returned for the series finale, much to our chagrin. The actor known for portraying Kyle Barker is Terrence C. Carson. Not only for his acting career, but he is also known for voicing Mace Windu in various Star Wars media.
Kyle is shown to be arrogant, pompous, and poised. While Kyle initially stayed in the brownstone, he eventually left to pursue a job in London, and Maxine accidentally obtained his sperm from a sperm bank, and Kyle became the father of Maxine’s soon-to-be child.
Why Did Kyle Leave Living Single?
Living Single actor T.C. Carson, who played Kyle Barker on the show, claims he was fired after criticizing Warner Bros. for ignoring the show in favor of Friends. Carson stated in an interview with Comedy Hype that he was unhappy with what was going on behind the scenes. They were getting fewer and fewer all around. They then created Friends and lavished them with gifts. Both shows were produced by Warner Bros. and aired on Warner Bros. lots.
So watching that, being on our lot and watching that, was a real slap in the face.” Carson claims that he frequently spoke on behalf of the cast when they were forced to confront producers about problems on set. Carson claims he was fired from the show after the studio became tired of the cast speaking out. Carson also revealed that after it was announced that his character would be traveling to London, he asked the show’s executives if he was being let go, and they denied it.
Carson then addressed some of the concerns raised by the cast, including how they were treated and script issues. Earlier in the interview, Carson stated that he and his former “Living Single” co-star John Henton, who played Overton Wakefield Jones, were unhappy with how their characters were initially portrayed. The producers wanted Carson and John to be Lenny and Squiggy from the ’70s sitcom “Laverne & Shirley”.
Carson didn’t like this idea, and at one point, they both would look up to each other and say that they couldn’t do it like that. They confronted the producers and told them that even though they understood what the producers are doing, they couldn’t pit two idiots against four strong women.
Frustrations between the cast and Warner Bros. grew over time. T.C. claimed that by Season 5, his feud with the network had erupted. Carson also reiterated the expectation that blacks should be happy to have a job and stay in their place when working for a white company. He said that even today, if you’re African-American, you shut your mouth and do your job; you don’t ask questions and be content with the fact that you have a job.
He stated that he was happy to have a job throughout his time on Living Single, but he understood the importance of the job he had. He also recognized the significance of these characters in his community. He claimed that the producers saw the problem as his ego rather than a problem. He was eventually fired and replaced by Terrance Howard. Nonetheless, his admiration for the series and the cultural impact it had remains unchanged.
