The major reason why Gary Burghoff left MASH after Season 7 was because of his desire to spend some time with his family. The actor made his exit in 1979, and it was very much unexpected.
However, Gary made his comeback in Season 8 for a special two-part farewell episode. It was titled- “Goodbye Radar.” His character was so prominent in the series that his departure also played a vital role.
Concerning his exit from MASH, Gary Burghoff said, “Family, to me, became the most important thing.” Well, family is important and should be prioritized by everyone over everything else because that’s the one that stays with us forever, no matter what.
Gary Burghoff has always maintained a busy lifestyle because of his workload. At that time, he was very much involved with MASH and was looking for some time off to spend time with his family. The reason for his departure is understandable and makes a lot of sense.
Well, Gary Burghoff’s character, Radar, was everyone’s favorite from MASH. As far as his departure reason was concerned, the director, Charles S. Dubin, felt like it was something else. He shared that Gary used to make him feel sorry for him. In addition to that, he also said that Gary didn’t feel neglected but acted as if he didn’t get his proper dues.
Keeping this entire thing aside, the director, Charles, shared that the major reason behind Gary Burghoff’s exit from MASH was different. The actor was having personal issues with his wife back at that time. He elaborated further.
In the “Goodbye Radar” episodes, Radar fell in love with a woman he had to bid bye to. But Gary couldn’t go on and ended up breaking into tears. The director then stopped filming for 15 minutes and gave a break. Another fact was Gary was undoubtedly very upset about his exit from MASH.
Well, Gary Burghoff had several issues on the sets of MASH. In case you don’t know, he has sleeping problems, because of which he is always late. It was reported that Garu didn’t appear as happy as others on the set. Also, it felt like the actor was anxious enough and wanted to play something different. We aren’t sure about this, though.
But, right after Gary Burghoff left MASH, he didn’t play many roles. Instead, he mostly made guest appearances in the spinoff, AfterMASH.
