Bilbo Baggins, the main character of The Hobbit, was written by J.R.R Tolkein in 1937. Alongside that, Bilbo was a supporting character in The Lord of the Rings also. In the movie, the Hobbit was selected to help Thorin by the wizard Gandalf to reclaim their ancestral home and treasure, which was stolen by the dragon Smaug. Bilbo sets out in a comfortable living, and over time, through the adventures he was in, he turns into a useful and resourceful member of the quest.
Born on September 22 of the year 2890, Bilbo Baggins was the only son of his parents. The name of his parents was Bungo Baggins and Belladonna Took. At the beginning of their life, Bungo created a luxurious life for Belladonna in Hobbiton, which they later left. They moved to a new home, where Bilbo spent the rest of his life. Bilbo was very curious about the news of the outside world as a young Hobbit. Because of this, Bilbo got noticed by Istar wizard and Gandalf during their visit to the Shire. Bilbo was good at rock-throwing, which he later practiced over time. That’s why birds and squirrels fled the area whenever he bent down to pick up a rock. After his father and mother died, Bilbo turned into a wealthy bachelor and acquired respect and reputation from the neighbors.
Bilbo’s journey
Now, in the year TA 2491, at the age of 50, Gandalf asks Bilbo and takes him on an unknown adventure. Gandalf used to send thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, to Bag End every day. These Dwarves actually needed an additional member for their company who were initially coming in pairs. Gandalf, who already had himself selected Bilbo as the best person for the Dwarves’ job. The Dwarves explained to Bilbo that they were among the Dwarves of Erebor. They had been forced from the Lonely Mountain when the Smaug attacked and took up residence there. Now their only goal is to take their place back. After listening to their story, Bilo agreed to help them and join them.
Bilbo and his companions then traveled to the High Pass of the Misty Mountains, where they witnessed the distant thunder battle of giants. In that journey, once Bilbo has to crawl his way through the pitch-black tunnel, using his hobbit nose to gain a sense of direction. At that time, unknowingly, he stumbled upon a small Ring. Although he had no idea about it, that lost trinket was the One Ring. Later the group traveled to Beorn’s house, where they rested after being gruffly taken in by Beorn and his animal servants. The team started to follow the way through the treacherous forest.
Like this, the whole company kept going with their adventure until they earned what they wanted. So after the adventure finished, Bilbo eventually made it back to Hobbiton. There he found an auction going on, at which his relatives were selling most of his possessions to the other hobbits. They thought Bilbo was dead. But his relatives got peeved seeing him alive. Later he had to buy all his belongings back. Although Bilbo came back safely to Bag End with his prize and lived in relative comfort, Bilbo’s life was not really the same as it had once been. On TA 3001, the Ring that he got had begun to affect him. He did not appear to have aged at all, although he felt older and thin inside. Which eventually led him to leave the Shire.
Why did Bilbo choose to leave the Shire?
Bilbo decided that he wanted to participate in one more adventure before he set up a place to settle down and finish his account of the Quest for the Lonely Mountain. At a farewell Birthday Party on September 22, which was held in his honor, he announced that he wanted to leave the Shire, to the shock of his family and friends.
