Based on Garrard Conley’s unforgettable memoir, Boy Erased is an intense drama film that was released in US theaters in 2018. Starring Nicole Kidman, Lucas Hedges, and Russell Crowe as the main cast, the movie is a biographical film that showcases actual events from Garrard’s life.
Although it shows many similarities with the memoir, Boy Erased does have certain scenes that take a different turn from what’s featured in the book. However, other than that, the storyline centers on Jared Eamons, a teenage boy who’s sent to a conversion program by his parents.
Aside from Lucas Hedges in the role of Jared and Nicole as Nancy Eamons, the cast of Boy Erased consists of Joel Edgerton in the role of Victor Sykes, Joe Alwyn portrays Henry, and Russell Crowe stars in the role of Marshall Eamons.
Boy Erased ended up garnering many positive reviews and tons of awards, not only for its emotional storyline but also for the impressive acting from the cast and its melancholy yet absorbing filming styles.
Boy Erased: About The Film
After Jared Eamons’ father, Marshall Eamons, finds out that his son is attracted to men, he sends him off to a conversion program called “Love in Action,” which is based in Memphis. Nancy, Jared’s mother, goes with him and lives near the program in hopes of checking up on her son regularly.
However, although Jared was sent here for conversion, Marshall failed to properly assess the place, and Love In Action turns out to be much more aggressive and stricter in terms of its teachings. Through an intense, emotionally filled journey, Boy Erased takes us through Jared’s experience at Love in Action and how all that ever mattered was acceptance from Marshall’s side.
Boy Erased: Filming Locations
Major filming for Boy Erased started sometime in September 2017 and lasted till April of 2018. With Eduard Grau as the cinematographer, shooting mostly took place in Atlanta, Georgia, although other locations have also been featured occasionally.
Atlanta, Georgia:
Atlanta is a city that is filled with all kinds of diverse places, hip nightlife, and a glittering skyline. However, for Boy Erased, the locations that we see featured include Holy Cross Episcopal Church, located in Decatur, Georgia.
This is where the main conversion therapy program, Love in Action, was operating. Jared was sent here as a way for him to come back to heterosexual beliefs. Although Love in Action was based here in the film, Episcopal Churches believe in inclusion, which is why they agreed to let the church be used for filming scenes from Boy Erased.
No other movie or TV show has been filmed in this church, but Atlanta has been featured in projects countless times, examples of which include Guardians of the Galaxy, The Walking Dead, Strays, Stranger Things, and Reptiles.
Besides the church, another location in Atlanta was the Morehouse College, at 830 Westview Dr. SW. In the movie, Morehouse College serves as the place where we see Jared entering college and becoming friends with Henry.
The car dealership in Boy Erased is located in Conyers, Georgia. This suburb has tons of attractions, Horse parks, and fun activities, making it a good place to visit if you’re staying nearby.
The other times we’ve seen Conyers in movies and series were through Ozark, Prisoners, and Teen Wolf. The Vampire Diaries and all of its spin-offs, like The Originals and Legacies, were also filmed in Conyers, GA.
Some parts of Tennessee were also featured in Boy Erased throughout the film. This is where Boy Erased is based, although it isn’t considered the main filming location. Tennessee is filled with exciting amusement parks, museums, and live music venues. Projects filmed in Tennessee besides Boy Erased are The Matrix, Silence of the Lambs, Cast Away, and Walk The Line.
Los Angeles, California:
The studio for filming the interior scenes throughout Boy Erased was based in Hollywood, LA. This is also where all of the final editing and reshoots took place before the final launch of Boy Erased.
At present, Boy Erased is available to watch on Netflix and Prime Video.
