Brad Falchuk’s The Brothers Sun is an action-packed comedy series that aired on Netflix in January 2024. Starring Michelle Yeoh, Justin Chien, and Sam Song Li, this drama mixes wholesome family moments with intense fight scenes and comedy.
The Brothers Sun revolves around the life of Bruce Sun, a young man who lives in LA with his mom and only recently finds out that he is a part of a gangster family from Taiwan. With no choice but to let him in and try to escape the other gangs, Mama Sun and Bruce Sun soon start adjusting to their new life with one of Taiwan’s biggest gangsters in their home. The show has tons of comedic moments and well-crafted dialogues that make it much more than just a normal comedy drama.
Michelle Yeoh stars in the role of Eileen (Mama), Justin Chein plays the role of Charles Sun, and Sam Song Li portrays Bruce. Besides them, other cast members that we see in The Brothers Sun are Joon Lee as TK Lee, Highdee Kuan in the role of Alexis Kong, Alice Hewkin plays the role of the twin sisters, and Jenny Yang plays Xing.
Filming Locations
Major filming for this Netflix Action series took place in Los Angeles, California, and Taipei City, Taiwan. The Brothers Sun production crew frequented these two locations, and the filming took almost three months to complete. Other places besides LA were also used in this Brad Falchuk show.
Taiwan:
The first episode features Charles, a well-known gangster, baking a delicious cake at his high-rise apartment. This mesmerizing building is all too real and is known as the Tao Zhu Yin Yuan building in Xinyi Special District, Taipei, Taiwan. Its curved shape and stunning architectural design have made it a local attraction.
With almost 21 floors all placed in a DNA-like design, this building was created back in 2018 by Vincent Callebaut, a Belgian architect. The building recently adopted various environment-friendly practices and has been specifically designed to handle earthquakes for a long time.
Another place in Taiwan that has been featured in The Brothers Sun is the Taoyuan International Airport, which is situated in Taoyuan City. Serving the entire northern region of Taiwan, this airport is a major transport hub for people all over the world arriving in Taiwan or leaving it.
In the 6th episode of The Brothers Sun, we see scenes that were shot right here at the airport, which is where Eileen has to come back to Taiwan to visit her mother. The Fu De Keng Cemetery, located at 116 Wenshan District, Taipei City, was also a part of the show.
While cemeteries are usually grim and scary to be around, this Taiwanese location is an exception since it’s filled with a shrine-like structure on each grave, giving the whole place an otherwordly atmosphere.
California, USA:
The California State University featured in The Brothers Sun isn’t a real place and was instead the Woodbury University located at 7500 N Glenoaks Blvd, Burbank, CA. The first few scenes from episode 1 were shot at the 4th Street Bridge, a famous location that has been a part of several movies and TV shows.
The apartment building where TK lives is the Kahlua Apartments, located in San Gabriel. Located at 5343 Rosemead Blvd #19, these fine apartments offer various kinds of rooms and whole houses for rent and are regarded as a highly-ranked community by the locals.
The Sound Nightclub at 1642 N. Las Palmas Ave, LA, was used to portray the Sure Sure Club from the Netflix series. The Chinese restaurant we often see in the show is the Xialongkan Hot Pot, a contemporary and diverse place that is always trending due to its tasty food.
The stunning Malibu mansion that the Suns live in is known as Villa Splendido in real life and has countless rooms, pools, and other amenities. The windy beach scenes from The Brothers Sun were all shot in Paradise Cove Beach, Malibu. The Church scenes were shot at the gothic architecture of Immanuel Presbyterian Church, which was built in the 19th century.
This sums up the locations from The Brothers Sun. Episodes are now available to watch on Netflix.
