Although the movie takes place in the made-up town of Hohman, Indiana, Christmas features an unexpected number of filming locations. A Story of Christmas After The Old Man’s death, Ralphie Parker is forced to provide his family with the ideal holiday, and Christmas follows him thirty years after the events of the first A Christmas Story.
There are only two settings in the story—Chicago and Hohman—but since Hohman is a made-up town, the production team had to create a place that felt authentic to the universe of the first A Christmas Story in addition to making use of its collection of filming sites.
While A Christmas Story Christmas is set entirely in the United States, its sequel was produced all over the world, from Central Europe to the Midwest. The sets used to represent a large portion of Hohman, Indiana, were constructed in Bulgaria and Hungary, but the A Christmas Story Christmas production also went back to several of the Cleveland and Toronto locales used for the original filming.
Even though the picture was shot in a variety of places, Hohman feels coherent because of them all. These are all the sites where A Christmas Story Christmas was filmed. A Christmas Story is mostly about the magic of childhood and the Christmas season, which is why it has become a holiday classic.
In the film’s well-known dream sequences, a young Ralphie Parker imagines himself as a Red Ryder BB gun-wielding Western hero protecting his home or being dragged around by his classmates while his teacher praises him for writing the best essay ever about what he wants for Christmas.
That particular, childlike perspective on the world that makes both setbacks and victories feel insurmountable was masterfully conveyed in the first A Christmas Story. Similar dreaming sequences can be seen in A Christmas Story Christmas, although the narrative focuses more on Ralph Parker’s attempts to deal with issues that are specific to adults.
Ralph’s anxiety that if he keeps fighting his children’s battles for them, they won’t be able to defend themselves after he is gone is seen in the dream sequence where he sees himself as a gunfighter at La Clint Eastwood and tries to fight alongside his kids. A Christmas Story Christmas differs slightly from the original in that it emphasizes the value of preserving a childlike sense of wonder rather than nostalgia and Christmas.
A Christmas Story Christmas Filming Locations
Sofia, Bulgaria
Even though A Christmas Story Christmas is set in the made-up American hamlet of Hohman, Indiana, a large portion of the film was shot in Bulgaria. Sofia, a well-liked travel destination in Bulgaria, is situated close to the Vitosha mountain. In early 2022, the actors of A Christmas Story Christmas spent time there as well.
Actor Zack Ward, who reprises his role as Scut Farkus from Christmas Story, says that Bulgaria was a great place to film the sequel because of the snow and the lower expense of setting up sets there than in Los Angeles. While in Sofia, the crew meticulously recreated the Parker family home and area from the first A Christmas Story Christmas, contributing to the revival of Hohman.
Hungary
A Christmas Story Christmas’s production, which started in February 2022, also included a few scenes shot in Hungary. The nation in central Europe is well-known for its historical structures and landmarks.
It’s an excellent location for filming TV series and movies because of this distinctive feature, especially for period scenes. Hungary was the ideal setting for the 1973 production of A Christmas Story Christmas because of its rich historical background.
Cleveland, Ohio
The 2022 sequel to A Christmas Story was partially filmed in Cleveland, Ohio, much like the first film. The city is home to several significant locations from the original Christmas classic, including the Higbee department store and the Parker family’s home, where two generations of Parker children visit Santa in between the two films.
These identical venues were undoubtedly used by the A Christmas Story Christmas performance, which had returned to Cleveland.
Toronto, Ontario
Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is another place that served as the setting for both the first A Christmas Story and its sequel. Given the abundance of Easter eggs and allusions to the original film A Christmas Story, it’s plausible that the cast revisited several of the Toronto locales from the 1983 picture.
The 2022 sequel features Easter eggs from two Toronto-shot locations from the original Christmas Story: the Chinese restaurant and the tree yard. The decision to revisit Toronto-based film sequences contributes to A Christmas Story Christmas’s successful re-creation of the original’s atmosphere and appearance, establishing it as a fitting sequel to the cherished first picture.
