With a sixth season already confirmed, the mockumentary horror series called What We Do in the Shadows follows the story of four blood-sucking vampires living in Staten Island.
The series is a creation of comedian Jemaine Clement, who has received much praise for the show. Let us take a look at all of the locations where the series was shot.
Starring a deeply funny cast including Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillen, Mark Proksch, and Kristen Schaal, this series has actually taken inspiration from the 2014 film of the same name, also created by Jemaine Clement and Taiki Waititi.
The show is a hilarious comedy that captures the struggle of three vampires named Nandor, Laszlo, and Nadja, and another named Collin Robinson as they try to adjust to the modern world. We see them give their all as they try to fight off other supernatural beings while also trying to keep their over a hundred-year-old identity a secret.
The show recently wrapped its fifth season, and it could not have been better. Overall, the mockumentary is absurd and outright ridiculous to an extent that you cannot help but laugh.
The actors who have been cast deliver their roles perfectly, and the writing of the show is also something fans should look out for.
The third and the fourth seasons of the show What We Do in the Shadows will probably get the most laughs from you as the writing, and the freakishly strong chemistry between the cast is a treat to the eyes.
The writers have not lost their hold on the script as they continue to write the funniest lines with a deeply supernatural plot.
The show, with all of its seasons combined, is a package of pure fun and laughter that may end up hurting your stomach. The show has gotten its acclaim not just from the viewers but also from the critics. Since its release, the show has been nominated for over twenty-one Emmy Awards as well.
What We Do In The Shadows Filming Locations
Toronto, Canada
The makers of the show, What We Do in the Shadows have set the entire story of these struggling vampires in Staten Island, the southernmost borough of New York City, but the filming for the show was actually done in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Like most shows that are said to be based in New York only for the cast and crew to have never even once visited the city for filming, this series also does the same. From what we hear, Staten Island’s cool and breezy weather, along with its exterior, could be conveniently used as a stand-in for New York City.
For this, the filming for a significant portion of the show was done in places in and around Toronto, Canada. The news of the crew landing in Canada for the shoot of their show spread among fans quite fast, which led many of them to capture and post pictures of the cast on their social media whenever they would spot them filming.
Considering the fact that the show is, after all, about a bunch of vampires and other mythical creatures, most of the shooting that the crew did was between sunset and sunrise, usually from 5:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
Whatever extra filming that had to be done, after the crew announced pack up from Toronto, was eventually, filmed later in their studio.
The only other place that the makers ended up scouting for their shoot that was not in Canada was the house where our age-old vampires lived together as roommates. The exterior of the gorgeous mansion that you can spot in the show is an actual place located in the United States.
It is called the Jared S. Torrance House, which was originally known as the Rose Hedge. This beautiful manor is situated in South Pasadena, California, specifically at 929 Buena Vista Street for those who wish to visit. The crew only used the exterior of this large place, while the interiors were all filmed in Toronto.
