Just when you think there cannot possibly be any more survival shows, another one pops up and throws you off. The reality show, Million Dollar Island, is another survival show that claims to be the realest and the toughest that there is. Obviously, the announcement of the release of the show had many feeling a bit skeptical, and the trailer release confirmed our worst fears.
The show, in a quest to be bigger, better, and grander, decided to bring together not twenty, not fifty, but a grand total of hundred contestants who would be put through the same fate as the contestants on other similar survival shows. The hundred participants would be asked to fend for themselves and survive on a remote island all for a prize of a million euros.
The unique reality show has its contestants trying to get their hands on food, water, and other basic necessities, along with games and competitions that will be introduced in every episode, the winner of which will get surprising benefits and a wristband worth ten thousand euros. Unlike other shows, the participants, hundred complete strangers, will be living together in a forced community for a total of two months or so.
The announcement of the show brought forth mixed reviews, with many outright questioning the show’s authenticity. Many compared the show with another extremely successful show titled, Survivor and also went on to call Million Dollar Island a cheap rip-off of the latter. The show lacks characters with the passion for survival and desire to win, and it looks to us that with each episode, the contestants just wait for the other to quit by themselves first so they will not have to make an actual effort within the show.
The show is relatively new, with boring contestants who heavily lack a screen presence, and with the show itself not offering anything all that unique, it is a miracle how it managed to get two seasons out.
What Island Is Million Dollar Island Filmed On?
While the show faced some trouble in deciding where to fly the contestants, it was eventually decided to take all hundred of them to a place that fans of Survivor may have already heard of. Much like the rest of the show, even the location of the series is copied off from another show. After much consideration, the producers of the show revealed to fans that the contestants would be spending two full months somewhere on Langkawi island.
Somewhere off the coast of mainland Malaysia, Langkawi Island is actually made up of a cluster of almost ninety-nine islands. The beautiful island is far from the general public and is completely isolated and cut off. It is full to the brim with natural beauty and breathtaking landscapes.
The island is separated from mainland Malaysia by the Strait of Malacca but is still a proud attraction of the country. With so many survival reality shows being shot in the same location, it is likely that the location will very soon become a tourist hotspot. With its fields, high-raised trees, and sandy beaches, the Langkawi Islands are the perfect spot for the contestants to set up camp and spend their rough sixty days.
Though the island, with its peaceful and calm setting, does not really sit perfectly with the intense roughhousing of the show and premise, it still makes it somewhat bearable to watch with its beautiful landscapes in the backdrop. There are many reasons why this location was selected for the show, and out of them, two of the most important would be the fact that the location is so cut off from civilization.
The other could be getting a filming permit from the organizations. The Langkawi Islands being featured on so many reality shows that also feature its raw beauty is just the promotion that they needed. The show would increase the island’s attraction but also make it an important tourist stop, which is great for Malaysia in the long run.
As mentioned, the Langkawi Islands are a cluster of other smaller islands. The producers of the show have not yet revealed which particular island they filmed the show on. All we know for sure is that it was definitely the Langkawi Islands.
