American football quarterback Patrick Lavon Mahomes plays quarterback for the National Football League (NFL) Kansas City Chiefs. He was a college football and baseball player at Texas Tech University. His father was former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher Pat Mahomes.
He gave up baseball after his sophomore year to concentrate entirely on football. He led all NCAA Division I FBS players in several categories during his junior year, including total touchdowns (53), passing yards (5,052), and passing efficiency.
The Kansas City Chiefs selected him with the tenth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Mahomes’ deal was restructured by the Chiefs and himself on September 18, 2023, providing him $210.6 million throughout four seasons—the highest salary in NFL history.
Mahomes became the fastest player in NFL history to reach 200 touchdowns in Week 4 against the Jets, passing for his 200th career touchdown in only his 84th start. He also broke Alex Smith’s team record for the most career running yards by a quarterback with his 51 rushing yards in the contest. Mahomes became the youngest quarterback in NFL history to defeat every other team in addition to his own after defeating the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5.
Week 12 saw Mahomes overcome a 14-point hole to defeat the Las Vegas Raiders 31-17, winning AFC Offensive Player of the Week. He completed 27 of 34 passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns.
Even though he achieved these milestones, Mahomes had his lowest season-to-date numbers in several categories, such as yards per attempt (7.0), passing yards per match (261.4), interceptions (14), & passer rating (92.6).
Throughout the season, his receivers had setbacks at various moments, and as of week 18, the Chiefs had the most intercepted passes in the league. Mahomes achieved a career-high in completion percentage (67.2%) even though his receivers led the league in drops.
Notably, Mahomes was fined $50,000 for openly criticizing the officials during the Chiefs’ 20–17 loss to the Bills, which resulted from receiver Kadarius Toney’s game-winning score being ruled invalid because Toney lined up offsides. Despite these setbacks, the Chiefs managed to win the division once more, thus Mahomes and a few other starters rested in the season finale.
What Happened To Mahomes Helmet?
Patrick Mahomes faced a first on Saturday, seven years into a career that has included two NFL MVPs, two Super Bowl championships, and an extensive list of accomplishments. In a wild-card game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the visiting Miami Dolphins, the temperature at kickoff was minus-4 degrees, making it the fourth-coldest NFL game ever recorded.
The circumstances at Arrowhead Stadium were ideal for an unusual result. Mahomes was put in an unusual situation when he experienced an equipment malfunction in that freezing environment. With 9:25 left in the third quarter, Mahomes scrambled right and raced forward for a 13-yard gain on a second-and-7 play.
When he bowed his head, Dolphins defender DeShon Elliott confronted him. The two players collided helmet to helmet, sending a fragment of Mahomes’ crown skyward. With the damaged helmet, Mahomes was allowed to play for two plays before officials forced him to get a replacement.
Following the Chiefs’ 26-7 victory, Mahomes stated in an interview, “I was very unhappy because my helmet’s warm and it cracked… and I put the other helmet on, and it didn’t fit at all.” “It spent the entire day outside in the bitter cold.” The quarterback missed the missing piece at first. Although I was unaware of what was happening at the time when I entered the huddle, everyone was telling me, In his news conference following the game, Mahomes stated. “I understand you guys, but I’m not leaving the game,” I said.
For me, it was a first. Mahomes said that getting the backup helmet ready for use required some manoeuvring. Mahomes stated, “We need to talk about where we keep the backup helmet because it was frozen.” “It was frozen when I tried to put it on. It wasn’t working for me. I don’t know if that was captured on camera.
It was not very appealing. However, we were able to make the necessary adjustments on the sidelines, get it somewhat heated up, and then continue. In the divisional round, the Chiefs will play either the Buffalo Bills, who will host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather, or the Houston Texans, who defeated the Cleveland Browns on Saturday.
