As the NFL season lingers on, so do the injuries. Injuries are terrible for players in high-contact sports, they require treatment, they reduce the quality of life of the athlete, have a negative impact on the team and player’s performance, still they’re an occupational hazard. So, the next one sent to the hurt locker is Bears QB Justin Fields with a hand injury.
To start things off, Justin Field’s injury is not a small thing, it is a big deal. We’re going to break it down for you, we will explain how did Fields hurt his hand, and we will let you know how this impacts Field’s season, and what does it mean for the Bears. We’ll also take a look at the Bears’s standings and how are they going to deal with this lesion.
With the Chicago Bears at the bottom of the NFC North table, things are not looking up for Head Coach Eberflus, who must now scramble amidst lesions and a losing streak to see if he can make his team bounce back.
What Happened To Justin Fields?
Justin Fields broke his thumb during a game. To get into technical terms, he suffered a dislocation of the metacarpophalangeal joint. This kind of injury isn’t common for a quarterback. Thumb dislocations are more frequent in linemen, and this type of lesion requires a different level of care and consideration when it happens to a QB, especially in their throwing hand.
Fields likely popped his thumb back into its socket, but when did that, he might’ve torn his volar plate, a crucial ligament in the thumb joint that lets us do thumb work. If you tear your volar plate, like likely Fields did, your grip capacity and throwing capacity are greatly hampered.
Things would’ve been different for Fields if he dislocated the thumb of his non-throwing hand and he might’ve been able to return to the field sooner. Still, with his throwing hand affected, he can’t grip the football, he can’t throw that football with high velocity and he can’t control the ball properly.
Surgery Likely & Injured Reserve List For Sure
Justin Fields will probably have a visit to the operating room, where an orthopedic surgeon, and a hand surgeon will take a look at his broken thumb. That surgery will repair one or two torn ligaments, including the volar plate.
As a result, Fields will be put in the injured reserve list. He’ll probably undergo several diagnostic procedures like a computer tomography (CT) to assess just how torn those ligaments and how dislocated that thumb really is.
How Long Will Justin Fields Will Be Out?
With a lesion like that and the probable surgery, we could estimate that Justin Fields will be out for at least a month. When Fields steps back into the field, he’ll need to focus on running plays instead of deep throws because the thumb joint needs recovery and the ligament needs to be at an optimum level in the passing motion.
What Are The Bears Like This Season?
With their Quarterback out, the Chicago Bears face trouble this season. They’re at the bottom of the NFC North, with the Lions and Packers at the top two spots. Currently, the bears have only won one game, and have had five losses, three of them at home. That losing streak is a bit of a drag.
Chicago Bears’s head coach Matt Eberflus has two quarterback replacementes: Tyson Bagent and Nathan Peterman. Still, more work needs to be done to get out of that bottom spot at the NFC North and try to have a decent season.
Eberfluss has linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, Tight ends Cole Kmet, Marcedes Lewis and Robert Tonyan. A more offensive play is required, and with their star QB injured, things are complicated for the fans, for the team, and for the organization
We wish Fields a speedy recovery to see him back on the play so he can charge his team into victory.
