Dragon Ball GT will forever hold a special nostalgic spot for some fans of the Dragon Ball franchise, even if it is not considered part of the canonical Dragon Ball universe. The non-stop action and intense fight sequences captivated viewers when GT first aired.
Goku’s final climactic showdown with Omega Shenron proved riveting, as Goku tapped into power from across the entire universe in order to defeat this ultimate foe. Yet after this triumph, Goku’s departure with Shenron left many fans wondering what happened to Goku at the end of Dragon Ball GT.
The mystical Dragon Balls stood at the very heart of the Dragon Ball story across multiple anime installments. Their wish-granting ability could be used for good or evil. But the overuse of the Dragon Balls spawned the deadly Shadow Dragons that ultimately threatened the Earth itself.
So it was fitting that Goku’s farewell tour with Shenron aimed to neutralize the potential harm caused by the Dragon Balls once and for all.
Goku sacrificed himself to safeguard the world from any further Dragon Ball-related threats. His poignant farewell brought closure to the GT saga, even if it was not considered canonical.
The GT anime concluded, passing on the legacy of Dragon Ball to new generations. While no longer canonical, GT still conjures up nostalgia for fans through its spectacular action and emotional resonance. The scenes of Goku riding Shenron into the sunset capped off his hero’s journey in dramatic fashion.
What Happened To Goku At The End of Dragon Ball GT?
The original and canonical Dragon Ball storyline had reached its conclusion with Kid Buu’s climactic defeat back in Dragon Ball Z. However, the anime storylines continued onward with the release of the non-canonical Dragon Ball GT series, which picked up the story years after where DBZ left off.
This time, the new storyline followed Kid Goku, who had mysteriously reverted back into a child. This was due to a wish made to the powerful Black Star Dragon Balls by the character Emperor Pilaf, who wanted to take revenge on Goku. The Black Star Dragon Balls were even more potent than Earth’s normal Dragon Balls.
Because of Pilaf’s wish, Goku was turned back into a child, although he still retained all his prior powers and strength.
Thus began an intergalactic quest between Goku, his granddaughter Pan, and Trunks to travel across the universe and recover the scattered Black Star Dragon Balls. Their goal was to eventually collect all the Black Star Dragon Balls and make a wish that could hopefully return Goku back to his original adult self.
After many adventures and battles, including the defeats of villains like Baby and Super 17, the gang was finally able to gather the Black Star Dragon Balls and prepare to make the wish to revive all those who had died in the recent battles.
However, instead of the normal Ultimate Shenron dragon emerging, a mysterious dark and evil dragon appears, refusing to grant Pan’s wish. This dark dragon then ominously spawned seven powerful Shadow Dragons, each proving strong enough to fight on par with even Goku in his Super Saiyan 4 transformed state.
Goku bravely battled and defeated all of the Shadow Dragons one by one until only Syn Shenron remained, the most powerful of them all. Syn Shenron then shockingly absorbed all of the Dragon Balls directly into himself, massively powering up into the fearsome Omega Shenron.
His strength now far exceeded both Super Saiyan 4 Goku and Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta. It ultimately took Goku and Vegeta performing Fusion Dance together into the mighty Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta to finally overpower Omega Shenron. Gogeta easily defeated the evil dragon and was about to finally kill him, only for the fusion to run out prematurely before the final blow could be struck.
So, while non-canonical, Dragon Ball GT supplied fans with spectacular fight sequences and high stakes. It showcased Goku’s unending bravery and heroism as he once again protected the Earth, even after being reverted back into a child through no fault of his own.
His intergalactic quest allowed him to transcend this setback and take down multiple fearsome foes spawned by the Black Star Balls’ unchecked power.
The end seemed nigh. Goku lay exhausted, his friends despairing. Omega Shenron towered undefeated. Yet one sliver of hope remained. Goku summoned his final ounce of energy. Drawing on the unity of all creation, he forged a Spirit Bomb of cosmic scale.
This ultimate attack harnessed the light of every world. With a thunderous roar, it streaked forth, colliding with evil’s heart. Blinding oblivion engulfed Omega Shenron. When the dust settled, only Goku stood tall.
In Goku’s darkest hour, the universe lent its strength. His Spirit Bomb transcended limits, fueled by life’s interconnectedness. Light conquered darkness. From the jaws of defeat, hope emerged triumphant. Goku weathered every storm through resilience and unity. With infinite potential inside each person, evil could never claim final victory. This climactic struggle proved darkness fleeting, but courage and goodness eternal.
Where Did Goku Depart Alongside Shenron?
Victory over Omega Shenron came at a great personal cost to Goku. Though the ultimate evil was finally defeated, Goku’s strength was completely spent dealing with the final blow. As the Dragon Balls reformed in the aftermath, the Eternal Dragon Shenron dramatically emerged before the exhausted Goku.
Shenron beckoned for Goku to join him as the two astonishingly ascended into the skies above together. Their exact destination remained unspoken and unclear. Yet a mystical fusion of sorts seemed to occur, with Goku’s essence merging into Shenron himself. This union baffled and confused all of Goku’s friends left behind below.
Shenron’s cryptic words before departure offered hints about this fusion. He declared no more wishes would be granted by the Dragon Balls for an entire era to come. This suggests Goku became eternally bonded with the Eternal Dragon himself, perhaps even gaining true immortality.
Their merging restored balance and equilibrium, neutralizing the calamitous risks posed by the Dragon Balls’ overuse. Goku willingly sacrificed himself so these mystic artifacts could once again be used to bring hope to the world rather than ruin.
Another influential theory proposes Goku actually perished from Omega Shenron’s attacks before the climactic final blow. If so, it was only Goku’s undying spirit that mustered up the ultimate energy required for the Spirit Bomb that ultimately defeated Omega Shenron.
This would explain why Omega’s attacks had no effect on Goku during the Spirit Bomb’s gathering – Goku was already in spiritual form.
If this theory holds, then after Omega’s defeat, Goku’s lingering spirit naturally merged with Shenron as they departed together. This permanent fusion also bonded him to the Dragon Balls themselves.
Supporting this, at the very end of Dragon Ball GT, Goku’s spirit was poignantly shown beside his descendant Goku Jr, still watching over generations later.
In life, Son Goku was the savior. In death, he became an eternal legend. However, the reasons remain partly shrouded. Goku’s mythic bond with Shenron lifted both to higher planes of existence.
Even his afterlife brought inspiration. His devotion to others shone brightest when needed most. For Goku, protecting the planet and those he loved mattered above all else in any form.
Why Did Goku Depart Alongside Shenron?
Goku’s departure at the end of Dragon Ball GT was a real head-scratcher. He just up and left with Shenron without properly explaining why he was leaving. Digging deeper into this unexplained departure, it seems his spirit may have actually fused with the Dragon Balls themselves, making him immortal.
The Shadow Dragons popped up in the first place because the Dragon Balls were misused and overused over time by selfish wishes. But Goku was different in his reasons for summoning Shenron – he used the Dragon Balls for good reasons, to help fallen friends and improve the universe. This pure-hearted purpose could’ve been what allowed Goku’s spirit to fuse and merge completely with the Dragon Balls.
When Shenron said no more wishes would be granted for a long time, he took the Dragon Balls and left Earth. And Goku went too, now eternally bonded and fused to the Dragon Balls themselves. His lifelong selflessness granted him the true immortality that others had selfishly sought from the Dragon Balls over the years.
With the Dragon Balls now in hibernation, Goku patiently waited for his chance to return to Earth. A hundred years later, his descendant Goku Jr. found the four-star ball – which was Goku’s childhood memento and his most prized possession. This hints that Goku’s spirit still deeply connects to and resides within that specific four-star sphere.
Goku’s unity and fusion with the Dragon Balls brought balance. As their immortal guardian, he could now guide the Dragon Balls toward righteous wishes when they were eventually used again. His lifelong purpose of protecting others continued, even in this exalted new form between realms.
