The Story Behind Curious George: Escape from Germany
The 2017 documentary film- Monkey Business: Adventures of Curious George’s Creators reveals the journey of Curious George from real life to books. You may know Hans Rey and Margaret Rey as the creators of Curious George, but did you know the couple encountered the German Nazis in 1940? Here’s what happened:
In an interview with PEOPLE magazine, Ryan Yamazaki opened up about his 2017 documentary and revealed the story of Hans Rey and Margaret Rey. He said Hans and Margaret met as teenagers and moved to Brazil after the First World War.
According to Yamazaki, the couple went to Paris in 1935 and stayed there for four years. He said- “What was supposed to be a four-week trip turned into four years..” In these four years, the couple finished writing the tales of Curious George.
During the Nazi invasion in 1940, Hans and Margaret fled to the nearest train station, but the soldiers caught them. When they thought it was the end for them, the soldiers found the Curious George manuscript in their luggage and let them go. As Yamazaki said- “They were very lucky.”
It seems like Curious George saved Hans and Margaret from the German Nazis, and a year later, the couple released the first edition of the Curious George book series. You can watch the adventures of Curious George on Peacock TV and Hulu Plus.
