Recently, the Canadian singer and songwriter Bryan Adams opened up about being friends with the late Princess Diana. While speaking about his bond of friendship with Princess Diana, he mentioned that it was a song he wrote for her doomed marriage with Prince Charles that sparked a friendship between them.
When the late Queen was on her tour to Canada, she even met Bryan Adams after a concert in Vancouver. The singer mentioned that the late royal found the lyrics related to him “losing his mind” on the day she was getting married to Prince Charles, and they were “very funny.” Princess Diana had truly felt relatable to those lyrics.
What was the relationship between Bryan Adams and Princess Diana?
According to Adams, he and Princess Diana were on great friendship terms, but the history of their bonding takes a different turn, where it seems like Adam was fond of her personality and Princess Diana was fond of his song.
In the 1990s, when Princess Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles (now King Charles III) was at stake, there were rumors all around that he and Princess Diana were having an affair. There were no comments on it by either of the parties, but in an interview, Adam, being asked about it, mentions that they “had a lot of really good conversations” as they had a fluorescence friendship.
During his interview, he also mentioned his thoughts on Princess Diana, to which he replied, in fact, it’s strange and surreal to think about. I really, really liked Diana; she was an amazing woman and a super-great inspiration.” He also feels that “meeting her was truly one of the greatest things that ever happened to me.”
Their rumor of having an affair was intensified by the comment made by Adam’s ex-girlfriend, Cecilie Thomsen, as she said that “ours was a stormy relationship, and Bryan’s affair with Diana didn’t make it any easier,” according to the reports in 2003.
Though in neither of the interviews did Adam mention anything straightforward about his feelings, he did state that after Princess Diana passed away, he retired the song in 1997 “out of respect,” which could mean that the song was, in fact, written and dedicated to Princess Diana by the singer.
Which song of Adam’s was about Princess Diana?
Adam made a remarkable breakthrough in the UK charts in 1985; this chart included his first top 40 hit, “Run to You,” which was followed by his singles, Somebody, Summer of 69, It’s Only Love, and Heaven.
The song to which Diana is referred to as the “behind person” is “Heaven,” released in 1984. The song includes the lyrics “The day that he married you, I nearly lost my mind” and “Diana, what cha doing with a guy like him?” The latter says, “the queen of all my dreams,” which seems like a reference to Princess Diana.
While talking about the husband of the “Queen,” Adams has penned, “He might have lots of dough, but I know he ain’t right for you” and further says, “You’ve got one choice—you can get away. Leave it up to me. I’ll bring the ladder if you bring your limousine.”
According to Adams, the song was inspired by the Queen Elizabeth II incident of “that guy who [had] broken into the Queen’s bedroom and sat on her bed smoking a fag.” He also refers to the lyrics of the song as “laddish humor.”
The singer and the late royal had accidentally met on an airplane. On this meet-up, he mentioned that he had used her name in his song, to which the princess responded, “Yes, I know, very funny. Actually, I’d like to hear it again.”
Later, the singer sent a copy of the song to Kensington Palace, and she invited him to the palace for tea. While on his way to the palace, he is astonished by Princess Diana’s behavior, and he says, “When I first went round to KP (Kensington Palace), she wasn’t like, ‘I really need to talk to somebody,’ and you don’t bulldoze into someone’s life wanting to know everything in the first 10 minutes.”
They had tea together and then got to know each other more. As the singer says, “Later, the more friendly we got, the more I learned what was really going on.”
