Showtime has been coming out with intriguing crime shows lately, and the newest addition to this list is the John Erick Dowdle series, Waco: The Aftermath. Set to have limited episodes, the series will document the cascading events that happened after the 1993 standoff between the FBI, the ATF, and the cult-like group, Branch Davidians.
The prequel to Aftermath was aired back in January of 2018, and it ended up garnering almost 1 million viewers weekly. Although the crime drama received good feedback for the acting and cinematography, it attracted controversial opinions with the way it portrayed David Koresh, the head of the Branch Davidians. Waco covered the events before and during the fatal fire from the perspectives of almost everyone closely related to the two groups.
Waco: The Aftermath will continue right after its predecessor with similar storytelling formats. Filming for The Aftermath took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico. With the same cast as before, the sequel was announced to premiere on Paramount+, but it was later taken up by Showtime in February 2023. John Leguizamo and Michael Shannon will be reprising their previous roles as Jacob Vasquez and Gary Noesner, respectively.
The crime series will provide a deeper insight into the fallout from the clash and the injustice the remaining members of Branch Davidians had to go through. As many regard the standoff as the emergence of the “Patriot” movement, the show will also be featuring the Oklahoma City Bombing and various other similar movements.
Waco: The Aftermath: The Cast
Most of the cast of the 2018 series will be returning on screen for a second time. The cast members of Waco: The Aftermath will consist of David Costabile in the role of Judge Smith, Giovanni Ribisi will play Dab Cogdell, J. Smith-Cameron will be Lois Roden and John Hoogenakker will play Clive Doyle.
David Koresh’s younger version will be portrayed by Keean Johnson, while Abbey Lee will play Carol Howe, a government spy. Shea Whigham will star as Mitch Decker, an important FBI agent. Annika Marks plays Kathy Schroeder, and Alex Breaux plays Timothy McVeigh. Other cast members of The Aftermath include Gary Cole, Michael Luwoye, Kali Rocha, Sasheer Zamata, and Alexis Berent.
Michael Shannon is a Kentucky-born actor who started his career in Hollywood through the film Groundhog Day and has since been a part of multiple projects. He has starred in other war/crime shows and movies such as Pearl Harbour and Criminal. Other examples of his work include Knives Out (Walt Thrombey), Amsterdam (Henry Norcross), and Abandoned (Renner). He also plays the role of General Zod in DC movies (Man of Steel, The Flash, Batman v Superman).
John Leguizamo’s character, Jacob Vasquez, is an ATF agent who specializes in being an undercover spy. Leguizamo is a Colombian actor who became popular after starring as Luigi in Super Mario Bros. (1993). Like Shannon, Leguizamo has starred in hit crime-themed projects as well. This includes his work in Carlito’s Way (Benny Blanco), and When They See Us (2019).
