The upcoming God of War Laufey has faced a wave of online criticism since its reveal, with some backlash focused on protagonist Faye’s appearance and the decision to make Kratos’ wife the playable lead. Now, Vincent D’Onofrio has publicly defended Deborah Ann Woll, the actor portraying Faye through voice and performance capture.

D’Onofrio, who worked with Woll on Daredevil, responded directly to one particularly critical social media post. His comments come as anticipation builds for the PlayStation 5 game, which is scheduled to launch on February 16, 2027.

D’Onofrio pushed back against the criticism in a post on X, making it clear that he disagreed with the attack on Woll and the game.

“In no way do I agree with you.”

He then praised his former Daredevil co-star, describing Woll as “beautiful and extremely talented” while also highlighting her intelligence, kindness and enthusiasm for gaming.

D’Onofrio also revealed that he is personally looking forward to playing God of War Laufey with his son. His response came after an X user criticized Santa Monica Studio over Faye’s appearance and called for a boycott of the game.

The controversy surrounding Faye is not entirely new. Since God of War Laufey was announced, some users have criticized the character design, while others have objected to the game moving away from Kratos as its central playable character.

Woll previously addressed the backlash herself during an appearance at Florida Supercon. She said she felt “totally unbothered” by the criticism because she was confident in the quality of the game.

The official PlayStation information confirms that Woll is reprising her role as Faye, with Jack Quaid and Perlina Lau also joining the cast as Phranque and Rue. The game follows Faye after her death as she awakens in the mysterious Everywhen and becomes caught in a new conflict involving gods and creatures from different mythologies.

Santa Monica Studio is using Laufey to explore a different side of the God of War universe while retaining the series’ action-focused identity. The game combines elements associated with the Greek and Norse eras while giving Faye a more agile and movement-focused combat style.
