After years of delay and growing anticipation, the highly awaited TVING original drama “Villains” has finally locked in its official premiere date.

According to a report by Herald Pop on November 7, 2025, the series is now confirmed to debut on December 18, marking the long-overdue release of one of Korea’s most talked-about crime thrillers.

“Villains,” starring Yoo Ji Tae, Lee Min Jung, Kwak Do Won, and Lee Beom Soo, was originally slated to air in 2023, but the project faced significant postponement due to off-screen controversy.

Despite the long gap, excitement for the show has remained strong, largely because of its star-studded cast and intriguing storyline centered around greed, deception, and survival in a world of organized crime.

The Story: A Battle Over the “Supernote”

At its core, “Villains” dives deep into the dark and dangerous world of criminal enterprise, following the high-stakes chase surrounding a mysterious counterfeit bill known as the “Supernote.”

This ultra-precise fake currency is so flawlessly made that it could disrupt financial systems if it falls into the wrong hands.

The drama will unfold as multiple criminal groups — each driven by ambition and personal motives — clash violently in pursuit of the Supernote.

With every character hiding their own secrets and alliances shifting by the moment, “Villains” promises to deliver a gripping narrative full of tension, betrayal, and moral ambiguity.

The show’s premise explores not just the physical battles among these outlaws but also the psychological warfare that defines the world of crime, where trust is fleeting, and betrayal comes at a high cost.

The Creative Team Behind the Series

“Villains” brings together a powerhouse creative team that raises expectations for its production quality and storytelling depth.

The series is directed by Jin Hyuk, the acclaimed filmmaker known for visually striking and emotionally rich dramas such as “The Tale of Lady Ok,” “Legend of the Blue Sea,” and “Master’s Sun.”

The screenplay is penned by Kim Hyung Joon, who previously helmed the 2010 thriller film “No Mercy.”

Kim’s expertise in crafting psychological tension and morally complex characters is expected to add a layer of realism and suspense to the series.

Together, Jin Hyuk and Kim Hyung Joon promise a cinematic viewing experience that blends intense character drama with high-stakes action and sleek visual direction.

Cast Spotlight: A Lineup of Veteran Actors

The ensemble cast of “Villains” is one of its strongest assets, bringing together some of Korea’s most respected acting talents.

  • Yoo Ji Tae, known for his roles in “Healer,” “When My Love Blooms,” and the international hit “Oldboy,” plays a central figure whose calm exterior hides deep strategic cunning.

  • Lee Min Jung, returning to the small screen after her praised role in “Once Again,” portrays a character navigating moral conflict amidst the criminal underworld.

  • Kwak Do Won and Lee Beom Soo, both seasoned actors with commanding screen presence, add further depth and gravitas to the show’s ensemble, ensuring that every confrontation brims with intensity.

The Controversy and Delay

Originally set to premiere in 2023, “Villains” was indefinitely delayed following Kwak Do Won’s arrest for drunk driving in September 2022, shortly after filming had wrapped up.

The incident forced the production team and network to pause the release and re-evaluate the series’ schedule.

Now, more than two years later, TVING has confirmed the official release, signaling confidence in the project’s final version. When asked whether Kwak Do Won’s scenes were edited or reduced, a TVING representative responded carefully, saying,

“It’s difficult to comment at this stage due to potential spoilers.”

The ambiguity has sparked curiosity about how the show might have been restructured for its comeback.

Anticipation Builds Toward the Premiere

With the release date finally set, “Villains” is positioned to be one of December 2025’s most anticipated K-dramas.

Fans are eager to see how its gritty storyline, combined with its cast’s powerhouse performances, will distinguish it from other crime thrillers on the streaming platform.

Between its layered characters, sharp writing, and striking visual style, “Villains” promises to deliver more than just an ordinary tale of crime — it’s expected to explore the moral complexities of human ambition and the cost of corruption.

As the countdown to December 18 begins, all eyes are on TVING and its cast to see whether “Villains” will live up to its long-awaited hype — and whether the shadows of its past will fade under the spotlight of its long-delayed premiere.
