U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris reiterated her alignment with President Joe Biden‘s Israel policy on Monday, following her recent remarks urging a ceasefire and highlighting the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
During a visit to Alabama, Harris called for a six-week ceasefire and emphasized the need for Israel to facilitate aid into Gaza, where conditions were described as “inhumane.”
Despite Biden’s longstanding support for Israel, he has advocated for a ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza and facilitate the release of hostages.
Harris reaffirmed the administration’s stance, emphasizing Israel’s right to self-defense while expressing concern over the high civilian casualties among Palestinians. She stressed the importance of delivering aid to Gaza and securing the release of hostages, maintaining consistency with Biden’s position.
Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza continued, with Hamas and Egyptian mediators engaged in discussions, despite Israel’s decision not to send a delegation. The United States has indicated that Israel is open to a ceasefire agreement, contingent upon Hamas agreeing to release hostages.
Harris emphasized the urgency of reaching a resolution, noting the opportunity to secure a hostage deal amidst ongoing negotiations. She underscored the desire for a swift end to the conflict, highlighting the significance of the outcome.
