A previously unseen Pokémon design has emerged from Game Freak’s archives, giving fans their first official look at a scrapped Delibird evolution that was once considered during the development of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The artwork comes from a behind-the-scenes Game Freak DVD dating back to 2004, providing a fascinating look into ideas that never made it into the final games.
The discovery arrives as Pokémon celebrates its 30th anniversary, a milestone that has reignited interest in the franchise’s development history. While leaked beta content has surfaced several times over the years, this latest reveal is notable because it originates from an officially produced development documentary rather than an unauthorized data leak.
Lost Delibird evolution discovered in Game Freak development footage
The design appeared in the “Pokémon Diamond and Pearl: Behind the Scenes DVD — MAKE ALL,” a development documentary created during the production of the Nintendo DS titles. According to reports, the DVD was listed at auction earlier this year before being purchased by a collector known as Neos, who later shared its contents with the Pokémon community.
The footage, archived by Lewtwo, showcases numerous concept sketches and early Pokémon designs that Game Freak explored before finalizing the Generation 4 Pokédex. Among the most surprising discoveries is a Delibird evolution that expands on the Pokémon’s festive identity. Unlike Iron Bundle, the futuristic Paradox Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, this unused concept resembles a larger, Santa Claus-inspired bird that builds directly on Delibird’s holiday theme.
Although the design never progressed beyond the concept stage, it demonstrates that Game Freak once considered giving Delibird a permanent evolution years before Paradox Pokémon were introduced.
The documentary also reveals early Pokémon concepts
The DVD contains much more than the unused Delibird evolution. It includes prototype artwork for several Pokémon that eventually appeared in later generations, including Baxcalibur, Tandemaus, and Sandygast, alongside early concept art for Dialga, Palkia, Arceus, and the original Diamond and Pearl starter Pokémon.
Another intriguing discovery is the appearance of yellow Shellos and Gastrodon, designs that recently received in-universe references in Pokémon Pokopia. Their inclusion has fueled speculation among fans that these alternate forms could eventually become official in a future Pokémon title.
Game Freak has occasionally revived older concepts years after they were first designed, making it possible that some of the scrapped ideas featured in the documentary could still influence future games. While there is no indication that the unused Delibird evolution will return, its official reveal offers fans a rare look into the creative process behind one of gaming’s most successful franchises.
