The United States has approved a substantial aid package to enhance Ukraine‘s air defense capabilities against potential Russian drone and cruise missile threats.
A U.S. State Department official revealed plans to sell up to $138 million worth of equipment for the maintenance and modernization of Ukraine’s HAWK air defense systems.
The assistance builds upon previous efforts, which saw the U.S. providing HAWK interceptor missiles as an upgrade to Ukraine’s Stinger air defense missile systems.
Ukraine has received various air defense systems, including the Patriot system, showcasing ongoing support from the U.S.
The emergency foreign military sale, announced on Tuesday, aims to equip Ukraine with essential resources, including engineering and integration for communications, as well as refurbishment of HAWK fire units. It also encompasses missile recertification components, tools, test equipment, spare parts, and more.
To facilitate the implementation and training associated with the sale, a delegation of U.S. government employees and contractor representatives will travel to Europe.
The utilization of presidential drawdown authority underscores the urgency of the situation, allowing swift transfers of defense articles and services from U.S. stocks without congressional approval.
The MIM-23 HAWK, with its origins dating back to the 1950s, has evolved to address modern threats, including jamming and countermeasures. Exported to numerous countries, it remains a vital component of air defense arsenals worldwide.
