Released on March 24th, 2023, Turn Up The Volume is an Australian coming-of-age story about a bunch of girls and gender-fluid teenagers. The ten-episode series is about how a group of unlikely teens meet up accidentally at a music camp and end up forming a band called, The Volume, together.
The show is refreshing and empowering as it is one of the few shows that talk about gender inclusivity and focus on gender non-conforming demography. Turn Up The Volume follows the not-so-normal group of teens who are wild, clueless, and unapologetically representative of their true selves.
It is a story about how these teenagers come to terms with their identity, their place in society, and how together they learn to grow and define themselves. Producers of the show have said before that the show has taken inspiration from the teen-focused documentary, No Time For Quiet.
Much like that documentary, the show explores the power and importance of friendships, developing deeper bonds, and having a sense of belongingness and a sense of community. It is a heartwarming journey of young ‘misfits’ exploring their identity while experiencing love, and friendship.
The show stars Riya Mandrawa as Vivi, Erza James as Hex, Elaine King as Ginger, Mira Russo as Breeze, and Ayiana Ncube as Jam, forming the main cast of the show. The show is currently airing its first season.
Turn Up The Volume: Episode 2 Summary
Vivi, Hex, Ginger, Breeze, and Jam come together and decide to form a rock band as the five quirky teens happen to share love and passion for music. The group is very clearly part of the gen z and all five of them have a social media presence. Vivi’s presence on social media is strong and her being ‘different’ from the rest brings her hate, making her a target of cyberbullying.
Episode two of the show is titled, “Be Still My Noisy Mind,” and focuses on Vivi being dragged online for being herself. While she continues to get the heat from haters, the group struggles to keep together. Having met not too long ago, the group is still trying to figure each other out with conflicts constantly arising.
They struggle to reach a decision for the name of their rock band and they seem not ready to listen to each other. Tensions are high with group struggles and Vivi being bullied. Among the chaos of group names and finding a sense of belongingness within the group, Hex finds a talent she did not know she had.
Turn Up The Volume: Episode 2 Recap
The band comes together for the first time ever and that is the cue for trouble to enter the chat. The group finds a shared passion for music among them and agrees to form a musical band together. They try to divide positions among each member and realize that though they are attending a music camp, not everybody has the musical talent required to be a band member.
Breeze, for example, is clueless when it comes to playing the drums and struggles to keep up with it. Jam and Vivi, the vocal and confident members of the group who are not afraid to put forth their opinions, end up clashing and arguing with each other. Ginger has talent in music and knows her thing but is anxious and nervous when it comes to actually being involved in music-making and performing.
She has a tendency to drown herself in music and block reality with the help of her headphones, which go missing in the episode. With Ginger’s nervousness at an all-time high, the band comes together to overcome the crisis together. The first episode is off with a rocky start for the band’s music career but it is still a long journey till the end.
