The Truxton series has officially returned after nearly four decades with the launch of Truxton Extreme on Nintendo Switch 2. Published by Clear River Games and developed by Tatsujin, the new title marks the first original entry in the legendary shoot-’em-up franchise since the arcade classic debuted in 1988.

To celebrate the release, the publishers have also revealed an official launch trailer showcasing the game’s updated visuals, fast-paced combat, and multiple gameplay modes.

Originally created by Masahiro Yuge, the new installment modernizes the series while preserving the intense action that made the original a standout in the arcade shooter genre.

Classic arcade action returns with new features

Unlike its predecessor, Truxton Extreme features fully rendered 3D graphics, large-scale boss encounters, and several gameplay options designed for both longtime fans and newcomers.

The game includes a Story Mode that combines comic-style storytelling with classic shoot-’em-up stages, while Arcade Mode recreates the traditional experience by challenging players to clear every stage in sequence.

New players can begin with Heart Starter Mode, which offers a more forgiving experience by allowing ships to recover after taking damage instead of immediately losing lives. Meanwhile, Team Mode introduces two-player cooperative gameplay, letting players share lives, bombs, and scores while rescuing each other during battles.

Additional replay value comes from Arena Mode, a two-minute score attack challenge, and Pipiruville, a side mode where rescued Pipiru aliens help players gradually develop their own village.

The official launch trailer highlights many of these features while showcasing the game’s updated presentation and intense bullet-hell action.

Truxton Extreme is available now both physically and digitally for Nintendo Switch 2.
