Some shows naturally thrive and survive, while others need to reinvent themselves to stay relevant. HBO’s True Detective is a prime example. The series, which started strong with critical praise in 2014, faced challenges in later seasons. However, the show’s fourth season, produced by Issa López, revitalized its reputation and attracted new viewers.
The success of the fourth season led to the announcement of a fifth season. López, speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, hinted that the next season will be very different from True Detective: Night Country. She described the upcoming season as “darker” and “twisted,” saying:
“I’m dying for everyone to know because it’s very different and very exciting. It’s even darker and even more twisted. I can’t wait to put it out there.”
López’s comments are exciting, especially given how compelling the previous season was with performances by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. The showrunner is also providing more details about the new season. In June, she shared that she is currently working on creating new characters and stories, saying:
“[I’m] in the writing [process]. And it’s a blast. It’s completely different. Different characters, different setting, different story, and I’m enjoying it like crazy.”
She continued, “I will not tell you that yet — yet. But it’s a completely different adventure. Let’s put it that way.” When asked about what elements from the fourth season might continue into the fifth, López mentioned that viewers will be “pleasantly surprised.”
‘Night Country’ Is A Worthy Installment
True Detective has had a mixed journey on screen, but the fourth season seems to have steadied the course. With a 93% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Night Country is an intriguing watch.
However, its audience score is lower at 56%, partly due to criticism from the show’s creator, Nic Pizzolatto. Responding to Pizzolatto’s comments, López said:
“For me, it was very confusing. To have created something that you have three goes at, very successful ones — and then it becomes something so meaningful that different filmmakers and different voices are going to come on board and keep it alive beyond you — is the dream.
When I move on, someone else is going to come and take the mantle and go in a completely different direction, and that’s going to be so exciting to me to watch. It feels a little silly to not enjoy that achievement, really.”
All seasons of True Detective are available for streaming on Max.
