You know the anime is rare and good when you see the antagonists are more popular than the protagonists. Such is Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses from Jujutsu Kaisen. We knew the anime is going to be good already. But, the moment Sukuna made his entry, his ice-cold personality created a fire within our hearts. All the weebs are down on their knees to worship Sukuna. Even though he made rare appearances throughout season 1 of Jujutsu Kaisen, every time he is on screen, his insanity makes our hearts go crazy.
And because of his rare appearances, we never got the chance to know him well. Can’t blame anyone for this. Every time he shows up, we are too busy gazing at his perfection. Who cares about the details of his past, when we are too busy falling for the details of his perfection.
But, just in case you are interested in knowing about this 1000-year-old King of Curses, we are here to enlighten you about Sukuna. He is a 1000-year-old cursed spirit, so there have to be at least thousands of mysteries that would make us want to know about him even more. But, we can’t possibly cover all of them. So, to make things easy for all of us here are the Top 10 Mysterious Facts about Ryomen Sukuna.
1. Sukuna Might Be The Strongest Cursed Spirit, But Is He The Strongest?
Ryomen Sukuna is called the King of Curses, which already sounds very intimidating. No other curses stand a chance against him. Even though he can annihilate other curses without lifting his finger, he still chooses to play with his prey. He likes to toy with these curses physically. But, if he is pissed, then he won’t need seconds to obliterate these curses. So, even when he is counted among the strongest characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, Why is not he the strongest of all?
The first and only reason that will rest this case is the fact that thousands of years ago he was still feared as he is now. But, even after all this power and fame, he still got sealed within his own fingers. Even though it took an entire group of sorcerers to seal him, still getting sealed like that for almost an eternity ends the discussion of him being the strongest of all. Other than that, in chapter 90 of the manga, Kenshku talked about the seal of Prison Realm. This is a living barrier that can seal almost about anything and it takes about 100 to 1000 years to lift that seal. The ‘Almost about’ didn’t represent Sukuna, because even Sukuna can be sealed within this barrier. But, revealed that this barrier can’t seal Gojo Satoru.
Doesn’t this prove the fact that Sukuna is not the strongest?
2. The Past Of Ryomen Sukuna
Ryomen Sukuna was not always a cursed spirit. He was once a human, and on top of that, he was a Jujutsu Sorcerer. During the golden age of Jujutsu, 1000 years ago, he uses to be called the Imaginary Demon, even when he was a human. He was so powerful that other sorcerers feared him. They all feared that he might be the very reason for the end of humanity. So, they all joined hands to kill Sukuna. Even though they did manage to kill him, they did not think of the consequences. After death, Sukuna became a cursed spirit. As a human, he was already very strong, but now he is a cursed spirit that is even stronger.
They thought killing Sukuna will save humanity. But, little did they know, they pushed humanity to even far greater doom. They might have sealed him, but his curse was so strong that they had to divide his curse into his own 20 indestructible fingers.
3. Sukuna’s Appearance
The way we see Sukuna when he takes over the body of Itadori Yuji, is not actually what people in the Jujutsu Kaisen world see. We get to see the unique marks all over Yuji’s body and we end up drooling over that perfection. But, that is not how everyone in the Jujutsu Kaisen world sees him. It is for our ease of convenience, that these markings are made visible for us to be able to differentiate between Yuji and Sukuna. But, in their world, no one can see these markings, and hence no one can differentiate when Sukuna takes over Yuji. No one can identify if it is Sukuna or Yuji if Sukuna takes over.
To prove this fact, in episode one when Yuji consumes the first finger, Megumi Fushiguro couldn’t identify whether it was Yuji in control or Sukuna. So, he tried to exorcise the body thinking that Sukuna was the one in control until Yuji told him that everything is under control and they should go to the hospital.
For, Jujutsu Kaisen people the only way to differentiate between Yuji and Sukuna is, when Yuji is shirtless, that’s Sukuna in control.
4. The Original Form Of Sukuna
The King of Curses is not complete yet. His real look is not even close to what he looks like right now. The legends say, that he has two faces and four arms. And that proves how he was sealed in twenty fingers. The cold nature Sukuna shows now is nothing compared to when he’ll complete his reincarnation. His present cold nature might excite you now, but once he is complete, his coldness might burn us alive. We’d still like that, won’t we?

5. Is Yuji Itadori Really A Vessel For Sukuna?
Yuji is feared among the elders in Jujutsu World, as he is considered the vessel for Sukuna. But, is he really a vessel for Sukuna? If Yuji was the vessel, Sukuna should have been able to have complete control over Yuji. But, so far it looks like Yuji has everything under his control. It is completely up to him when Sukuna needs to be given control.
Yuji is more like a prison to Sukuna than his vessel. Now that he is inside Yuji, he can neither take control on his own nor get away from this human prison.
6. Metamorphosis
Sukuna might not be able to gain complete control over Yuji’s body, he has the ability to annoy Yuji from time to time. And that ability is called the Metamorphosis. He can create eyes and mouths on Yuji wherever and whenever he likes. This allows him to observe the surroundings and speak whenever he likes, without even having control over Yuji’s body.
There was an incident in episode 24 when Megumi was handing over the fourth finger to Yuji to keep it for later, but Sukuna created a mouth on Yuji’s hand and ate it immediately. And also, from time to time Sukuna uses this ability to taunt and annoy Yuji, especially the moments when Yuji actually needs Sukuna’s help.
7. Why Is Sukuna Interested In Megumi Fushiguro?
It is shown in anime as well as in the manga, that the Ten Shadows Technique of Megumi Fushiguro is what interests Sukuna. Why would that technique interest the King of Curses? This is just a theory, but what if this technique has something to do with him getting sealed thousand years ago? What if this is one of the rare techniques that might be his weakness. And getting in control of your weakness is something the King of Curses might plan of.
Also, as we can see that he can’t have control over Yuji’s body, so that has to be frustrating for him. So, Sukuna wants Megumi to be his vessel in which he can have control over the body as well as the Ten Shadows Technique. That’s why he wishes Megumi to get a grip on this technique.

8. Cursed Energy Manipulation
The infamous name “King of Curses” was given to him because of his ability of Cursed Energy Manipulation. Sukuna possesses cursed energy so immense that he can use all his techniques the entire battle without tiring himself at all. Calling him King of Curses sounds small now. He should have been called the God of Curses. He can use both, Domain Expansion as well as Reversed Cursed Techniques, which is something only Gojo can do other than him. They both are on a whole another level.
His Reversed Cursed Technique gives him the ability to reverse any curse used against him. He can heal himself and his host with this technique. Not only that, he can bring his host back to life using this technique. We all saw that happening in episode 6 when Yuji came back to life. Credit goes to Sukuna.
9. The Binding Vow With Yuji
It must have been frustrating for Sukuna to not have control over his host’s body. But, he is known to be a huge manipulator. So, when he got the chance he made a Binding Vow with Yuji that allows him to have complete control over Yuji’s body for an entire minute. All Sukuna has to do is chant “Enchain” and the body belongs to him for complete 60 seconds.
The deal of this agreement was that in these 60 seconds Sukuna is not allowed to kill anyone, and Yuji won’t remember about this agreement after the deal is made. But, we know what Sukuna is capable of even without killing anyone. You might think what can Sukuna even do in these 60 seconds. But, don’t underestimate him. He is called the King of Curses for a reason. These 60 seconds are more than enough for him to plot something to either gain complete control over Yuji or get out of this body and possess someone else who he can control. Someone like Megumi. Who knows what might happen?
10. Barrier Technique: The Malevolent Shrine
Sukuna’s Fukuma Mizushi, the Malevolent Shrine is a Domain Expansion Technique, that is different than any other sorcerer’s or curse’s Domain Expansion. Other users form a barrier and expand their domain within their barrier. But this technique allows him to expand his domain over the real world. This gives him the advantage of covering a larger area under his control. Just like when he said, “This ability makes him an artist who paints his masterpiece not on a canvas, but air”.
That is how his Domain Expansion is different than other users.
