The Minnesota Timberwolves won 98-90 against the Nuggets on Sunday, which was a surprise because the Nuggets were ahead by 15 points in the first half, and many thought they would win.
At half-time on “Inside The NBA” on TNT, Charles Barkley said, “They gotta take Gobert out the game…Joker is just throwing him around like a damn ragdoll, first and foremost.”
The Sixers legend thought Gobert was ineffective on both offense and defense and pointed him out as the weak spot in the Timberwolves lineup. After the win, Gobert was told about Chuck’s comments and responded humorously. “I don’t watch these guys. … I’m glad coach didn’t listen to his advice,” said the Frenchman, making the media laugh.
This wasn’t the first time Gobert faced criticism for his performance, especially against Nikola Jokic. But after a rough first half, the Timberwolves turned things around in the second half, thanks to a strong performance from the 7’1″ center.
Gobert Leads Strong Defense in the Second Half
After scoring 53 points in the first half, the Nuggets only managed 37 in the second half. Much of this was due to the Timberwolves’ excellent defense, led by Rudy Gobert.
The Timberwolves’ 19-3 run was the turning point of the game as they fought for every ball. Karl-Anthony Towns and Naz Reid also played well, with KAT finishing with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Gobert nearly had a double-double, recording 13 points, 9 rebounds, and 1 assist. He also surprised everyone with a mid-range fadeaway in the fourth quarter.
The strong defensive performance and comeback win against the Champions will boost the Timberwolves’ morale as they head into the Western Conference Finals against the talented Dallas Mavericks.
