There’s Something in the Barn on Netflix and it is about an American family who moves to Norway during Christmas. They find out that their barn is home to a creature from Norwegian stories. The family doesn’t listen to their son’s warnings about the creature, and it starts attacking them.
The family in the movie includes Bill, his wife Carol, his kids Nora and Lucas, and their stepmom Carol. They got the farm in Norway after Bill’s uncle died mysteriously.
Nora doesn’t like her stepmom, and she’s having a hard time adjusting to the move. At first, they spend time exploring Norway and realizing how different it is from the U.S. Bill.
Carol try to make friends with the locals and come up with ideas to fix up their barn, but people aren’t very welcoming. Lucas, wandering around town, meets a man named Tor Age who talks about creatures called Barn Elves from Norwegian stories.
Tor Age tells Lucas that Barn Elves can be nice if treated well but can turn mean if upset. He gives Lucas three rules to follow to stay safe: no artificial lights, no changes, and no loud noises.
Ending Explained
Lucas finds the Barn Elf living in their barn and offers it a cookie. They become friends, like Elliot and ET or Billy and Gizmo. Lucas tries to explain to his family how to keep the Barn Elf happy, but they ignore him and plan a big party in the barn, breaking all the rules.
During the party, the Barn Elf destroys the decorations. Liv, the town’s police officer, blames local kids for the damage. They won’t help if the Barn Elf gets even angrier.
Despite warnings, the family goes ahead with the party. The bright lights, loud music, and Nora vomiting on the main elf make things worse. Lucas learns from Tor Age that giving the elf porridge with cinnamon and butter can make peace.
They sit down for dinner, but nobody likes the traditional Norwegian dish, Lutefisk. Bill eats Lucas’ porridge and dismisses him again. Lucas gives the Lutefisk to the elf, which makes it angry, and it goes on a rampage.
The elf kills a neighbor dressed as Santa by making an icicle fall on him. Bill tries to help the family escape but fails. More elves come, surrounding the family.
Each family member fights back using their own methods. They call the police, but the officer doesn’t believe them and gets killed by the elves.
The family splits up. The boys go for help while the girls stay in Nora’s room. Nora and Carol make explosives to scare off the elves. They bond during the chaos, and Nora admits she accepts Carol as her mom. They fight off the elves, with Carol using an American flag as a weapon.
