Viewers have to be open-minded and understand a certain kind of humor to like dark comedy A.K.A. black comedy, movies, and TV shows. The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent’s storyline revolves around Nicholas Cage, an actor, who begrudgingly accepts a one million dollar offer to attend the birthday of a billionaire super fan. To extricate his wife and daughter from the notorious drug lord fan, Nic is forced to become a version of some of his most iconic and beloved characters, and things then take a wild turn. The Nicholas Cage of this film is an actor in crisis. Even while Nic would be more than happy to play the quirky uncle in a Duplass Brothers film, the devil on his shoulder is adamant that he lives up to his potential as a blockbuster movie star. His inability to connect with his ex-wife Olivia and daughter Addy combined with the indecision about his career lead him to a drastic decision. He chooses to accept a one million dollar payday from Spanish billionaire and Nic Cage fan Javi Gutierrez to fly out to Mallorca, perhaps even read his script, but mainly to spend some time with Javi.

However, Cage is intercepted by two CIA handlers to infiltrate the cartel connected to Javi’s compound and perhaps even save a life or two, in a twist. Movie fans have the opportunity to get more closely invested with their favorite actors, in the age of social media. All those actors would be very lucky if they got their own movies like Nic Cage got this one. It is hard not to be won over by the movie’s pure love for its central massive talent. It has never been entirely clear to me why Hollywood has mostly resisted the novelty of actors playing themselves projects. It can be a real treat when done well like the Seth Rogan bunch in This Is The End or Neil Patrick Harris in Harold and Kumar. However, the movie does fall short in some meaningful areas, despite all the good vibes generated from its premise. That being said, it is a good and fun movie to watch and we highly recommend it.

The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent Release Date

The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent premiered at South by Southwest on March 12th, 2022. The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 22nd, 2022, by Lionsgate. Even for a breezy comedy, the movie’s attention to detail is frustratingly slight. Several character arcs are never really concluded and important events frequently occur off-screen. Even though it is a comedy-action film, the action portion lags behind the comedy. This can be due to the modest budget of the film. A couple of mostly inert car chases is all that the feature can muster and they mostly serve to slow the jokes down. However, despite all this, the movie is still worth the watch. The movie also has two fun cameos in it, one near the beginning that should delight indie movie and comedy fans, and one near the end that should delight everyone else.

The film is genuinely funny. It does occasionally indulge in that extended universe-style callback humor a bit too much here and there. However, it shines when crafting its own big comedic set pieces.

Love watching and writing about my favorite TV shows and movies, which makes this the perfect job for me. Prefer TV shows over movies, there is nothing better than getting emotionally invested in a long Tv show and its characters. Favorite genres include sitcoms, fantasy, and horror. Favorite TV shows include Friends, The Office, Parks and Rec, New Girl, Brooklyn 99, The Vampire Diaries, Nancy Drew, and The Haunting Of Hill House. Highly recommend all of these.
