The 44-year-old California musician Luis Vasquez, who performed and the stage name The Soft Moon, has passed away, per the confirmation given by a representative to USA TODAY. The cause of his death has not been revealed yet.
The death news of the singer, The Soft Moon, was broken to his fans by his manager through a post on his official Instagram account on January 19. A post was made by his manager who requested to respect the ‘privacy during this difficult time’ at the moment needed by the family and friends of the dead.

The unexpected death news of the Exister album singer was broken to his fans through an Instagram post made on his official page (@the_soft_moon) by his manager, Marco Rapisarda, after the death of the star on January 19, 2024.
The post started with, It is with great sadness that we announce a dear friend, Luis Vasquez, has passed away. The Star Moon was 44 years old, and the reason behind his death remains uncertain as no words have been shared about it.
Further, the post reads, “Our hearts and thoughts are with his family, friends, and extended music family,” the Wasting singer was born and raised in Oakland, California. Rapisarda also requested that “We ask that you respect their privacy during this difficult time” through the same Instagram post.
As per the information on his website, The Soft Moon was about to perform in the upcoming month at shows and festivals in Denmark, Georgia, Turkey, and Greece.
Rapisarda, the manager of The Star Moon, had also requested to come forward and share a memory of Luis. He wrote a sentence that reads, “No matter if you were a close friend of his or not, please feel free to share” in the same post. As per the bio given on Spotify about the singer, Luis Vasquez started his first band at the age of 15.
The post related to the news of the death of Vasquez concluded with, “This is a huge loss, and hearts are broken.” It comes to light that when Vasquez was 12 years old, he got into music after his grandfather got him a guitar.
Luis Vasquez made his career debut in 2009 by creating the band The Soft Moon. Following this, Vasquez was approached by Captured Tracks, a Brooklyn-based label, for a record deal. In 2010, Luis released his first singles, which included Breathe the Fire and Parallels, released on 7 vinyl under the Captured Tracks imprint.
In 2010, Vasquez released his first self-titled album, The Soft Moon, after which the band toured in 2011, opening it in the US for Interpol and Mogwai. After two years, in October 2012, Soft Moon released its second album, Zeros.
The lead single, Black, from his third album, Deeper, released in 2015, earned the Best New Track honors from Pitchfork. The Him song singer has released five other albums in addition to some remixes, instrumental projects, and EPs in addition to the album released under his birth name.
The other albums of Vasquez include Criminal in 2018, the remix of the same, and his 2015 release, Deeper. The fifth and final album of The Soft Moon is Exister, released on 23 September 2022, and the album had an instrumental album release last year, December 2023.
The Soft Moon also performed on 28 April 2023 at the Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Netherlands, and had his performance on May 20 at the Cruel World Festival in Pasadena, California, which now counts as his last one.
The Star Moon profile on Spotify has listed his five top-listened songs—Surgery, Interno, This Guilt, Under My Teeth, and The Wasp—from his 2021 album, A Body of Errors.
The Soft Moon died on this Friday in Los Angeles. However, the reason behind the death of the singer is still not revealed. As per the sources, the Los Angeles County coroner has stated that there are chances of the death news of Luis Vasquez being related to the other death case on the same day of the techno music DJ Silent Servant (46).
