Netflix has officially announced a new anime feature, THE RIBBON HERO, inspired by Osamu Tezuka’s iconic manga Princess Knight. The film is set to premiere globally on Netflix in August 2026, bringing a modern reinterpretation of one of manga’s foundational works to a worldwide audience.
Directed by Yuki Igarashi, the project marks a significant milestone in his career as his first feature-length film. Igarashi previously gained recognition for his detailed and expressive animation work on the ending sequence of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1.
He later made his directorial debut with Star Wars: Visions – Lop & Ochō, which was praised for its refined storytelling and dynamic visual execution. With THE RIBBON HERO, Igarashi transitions into long-form storytelling while maintaining his focus on fluid animation and emotional depth.
In a statement accompanying the announcement, Igarashi expressed deep respect for Tezuka’s legacy as well as the theatrical influences behind Princess Knight, particularly the work of Ichizo Kobayashi and the Takarazuka Revue.
He emphasized that the film is intended to capture the spirit of classic entertainment while resonating with modern audiences. According to Igarashi, the goal is to deliver a story that feels both timeless and immediate, combining dramatic intensity with accessible storytelling.
The creative team supporting the film includes several notable names from across the anime and gaming industries. Kei Mochizuki is responsible for the original character designs, bringing experience from popular titles such as Fate/Grand Order and Touken Ranbu.
Mai Yoneyama contributes to character concept development, building on her work in projects like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Animation character design is handled by Issei Arakaki, while art direction is led by Cedric Herold, ensuring a cohesive and visually distinctive presentation.
Animation production is being handled by OUTLINE, a studio founded by Igarashi and known for its focus on expressive character animation and polished visual style. Production is overseen by TWIN ENGINE, which has built a reputation for supporting ambitious and artist-driven anime projects.
While specific plot details remain limited, THE RIBBON HERO is described as the story of a lone hero who challenges a predetermined fate within a richly designed world.
This premise reflects the thematic roots of Princess Knight, which explores identity, destiny, and resistance against rigid societal expectations. The new adaptation is expected to expand on these ideas while incorporating more contemporary pacing and action-driven sequences.
Netflix’s involvement highlights its continued investment in high-profile anime productions aimed at global audiences. By revisiting Tezuka’s work, the platform connects a historically significant property with modern production values and storytelling techniques. This approach not only honors the original material but also introduces it to a new generation of viewers.
As anticipation builds ahead of its August 2026 release, THE RIBBON HERO stands out as a project that bridges classic manga heritage with contemporary anime filmmaking. Further details, including voice cast and additional promotional material, are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
