Warner Bros. Discovery’s Anime Expansion: A New Era of Creativity and Collaboration
James Gibbons, shedding light on Warner Bros. Discovery’s ambitious plans, highlighted the lucrative partnerships the company has forged with third parties through its original anime IPs.
He emphasized the company’s intention to collaborate with studios to adapt more projects, such as the DC Universe, akin to the successful venture with Suicide Squad Isekai.
“There is Japanese anime that comes from original IP. But there’s also anime that comes from elsewhere,”
Gibbons pointed out.
“And we’ve looked at our DC universe and said, ‘Can we take these characters and reinvent them in anime,’ which is not straightforward because you have to do it the right way. You have to work with the right studios to make it happen and to build your fan base.”
While the surge in anime production might raise concerns about quality, Gibbons reassured that Warner Bros. Discovery is meticulously selecting studios to reinvent each character.
Despite the increased output, the company is approaching the expansion with precision and care. We’ve already witnessed the fruits of this approach with successful adaptations like Suicide Squad Isekai, Rick and Morty: The Anime, and the forthcoming The Lord of the Rings movie. And there’s more excitement on the horizon.
At the end of the day, the surge in anime production means more experimentation. We can anticipate diverse interpretations of WB’s franchises and a resurgence of beloved anime from the past.
