“House of the Dragon” Season 2 had several major events. Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) gained power by attacking Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), and Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) got three new dragonriders. Alicent (Olivia Cooke) betrayed her sons and made a deal with Rhaenyra.
However, one of the biggest moments early in the season was the loss of an important character: Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans). He is not dead, but he is missing from the show for several episodes. Otto was dismissed by his own grandson due to his cautious nature and sent away from King’s Landing. This was a significant setback for the Greens, who depended on his strategic advice.
Without his position as Hand of the King, Otto looked for other ways to be useful in the war. However, the series does not follow him. Instead, the story continues without him. Otto does not reappear until the final moments of Season 2 when he is shown imprisoned.
The scene is brief and does not reveal who captured him. It is unclear who might have him, especially since he had many enemies. Rhaenyra’s allies would benefit from Otto’s imprisonment, as would those trying to gain power among the Greens.
Does ‘Fire & Blood’ Provide an Answer for the Otto Mystery?
Otto’s capture is a mystery due to his long absence. It has been six episodes since he was last seen, so he could have traveled across Westeros.
The last information about him was that he planned to leave King’s Landing to recruit more allies for Aegon. He and Alicent discussed various destinations, including Oldtown to mentor Daeron, but they agreed that his best option was to go to High Garden, the home of the Tyrells.
Otto aimed to secure support from the Greens in the Reach. However, his mission did not succeed as planned. The Greens mentioned that Lords of the Reach, who support Rhaenyra, were attacking the Hightower army. Otto’s capture remains unknown.
He stopped responding to Alicent’s letters, which must have been when he was captured. This was mentioned back in Episode 2, and what happened between then and now is uncertain.
In the civil war across Westeros, Otto has many enemies. Anyone among them would be pleased to capture one of the Greens’ key strategists.
One theory suggests that if Otto traveled to the Reach, Black supporters there could have taken him hostage. The Beesburys, who blame the Greens for the death of their former lord, Lyman Beesbury (Bill Paterson), might hold a grudge against Otto since his death occurred under his watch.
Another theory is that Otto did not travel far. Some fans think he might be imprisoned in the Red Keep. However, these cells are controlled by Aegon, who chose to banish Otto rather than imprison him.
Alicent and Aemond also control these cells and have tried to contact Otto. But Larys Strong (Matthew Needham), a cunning character in King’s Landing, may have wanted Otto out of the way.
Larys’s manipulation led to Otto’s banishment, and he gained power in Otto’s absence. If Otto were in the Red Keep’s cells, both Alicent and Aemond might be unaware of what is happening.
“Fire & Blood,” which covers early Targaryen history, including the Dance of the Dragons, does not answer the question about Otto’s capture. It does not give details about who might have taken him.
Otto’s story diverged from “Fire & Blood” after he was removed from the council. He remained in King’s Landing and was present when Rhaenyra took over the city. His support for Aegon was punished by beheading.
Although “Fire & Blood” does not reveal Otto’s fate, this might be beneficial. Season 2 leaves Rhaenyra ready to take King’s Landing, which would end Otto’s story if the series follows the book. However, his captivity might keep him alive for a longer time, possibly bringing him back for Season 3.
Otto’s ambition and cunning are worth exploring further, especially since he played a minor role in Season 2. He is a significant asset to the Greens, and extending his role beyond his book death could make the story more interesting.
