The episode begins with Liu Yan having a confrontation with the empress. She is being mean to him, and Liu Ju, who is back in the palace, decides to intervene between the two. He intends to take Liu Yan away, but the queen does not let that happen. Ju gets agitated, and his health starts deteriorating.
Empress Dowager tells him that if he had not returned, Yan would have been dead by now. When Yan says that you have finally admitted it, the queen does not feel guilty about it. Instead, she exclaims that Yan would have died a lot earlier if his mother had not cut her stomach to give birth to him.
Similar would have been the case if Liu Chen did not protect him. Ju feels hurt by how heartless his mother is, as Yan was an innocent 6-year-old that she tried to kill. Empress expresses her pain at how the emperor treated her just as a queen and not as a wife, whereas he loved Concubine Yun.
When he died, his last words were not for her but for taking care of Liu Yan. Ju asks Yan to forgive the empress, but he cannot since she has killed several innocent people. Suddenly, Ju starts puking blood and asks Yan to take care of Chen and his children.
The emperor passes away, leaving his mother crying. Xiaotang runs towards Princess Roujia to hug her and tells her that the empress has admitted her sins, but she stabs him unexpectedly. Roujia thinks he is equally responsible for countless innocent people dying, so he deserves this.
When he meets Empress Dowager, she shows her true colors. She admits how she was the spy who pretended to be a helping hand and managed to place her obedient subordinate Pei Lan close to the empress to get insights about her.
She wanted to take revenge on the empress for killing her mother, and she used Xiaotang’s feelings for her as a weapon against the empress. Lately, when things went wrong, she had to return to Jiangnan.
