Who doesn’t know about the Golden Globe Awards? It is recently the talk of the town with Naatu Naatu song from the blockbuster film RRR becoming the first Indian song to win the award for “Best Original Song.” The award show was banned from airing in 2022 by NBC for lacking diversity in the members association. The show has been going on for 79 years, excluding the year 2022.
The Golden Globe awards began back in January 1944 and are known for awarding and acknowledging excellence in American and International film and television. The awards are discussed and presented by a committee of 105 members who are a part of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The awards have been a major part of the film industry and are normally held in January. The committee was formed by Los Angeles-based foreign journalists to develop a better-organized process of gathering and distributing information related to the film industry. Some certain rules and regulations have to be followed by the committee before considering a film for nomination.
Any film could be considered for nominations if released between January 1 to December of the year and is of more than 70 minutes. The award ceremony is broadcasted in 167 countries and generally gets ranked as the third most-watched award show.
The series is broadcasted on the NBC network. The awards are losing their relevance in recent years as they were surrounded by a controversy that broke the trust of millions of viewers of the show.
The Golden Globe Controversy Explained: Why Wasn’t The Show Allowed To Air In 2022?
The first ever controversy the show surrounded itself with was the lack of diversity in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The show wasn’t permitted to air in the year 2022 by the Network as it didn’t have a single black member on its committee. The awards show received severe backlash from the audience and, over time, has been labeled as racist.
The NBC network gave an open the door to the Award show to air in 2023 if they make some changes in their committee and the rules for the decisions to be considered fair. The first black host Jerrod Carmichael opened his monologue by pointing out the hypocrisy and racism present in the committee. The committee didn’t have a single black member till the death of George Floyd.
Jerrod revealed the reason behind taking up the gig was solely the hefty check which came with the hosting offer. This year the show was allowed to air after they included black committee members, and the awards were also given out to several black actors.
The former president Phil Berk of the committee also got in trouble after he mailed the member and association about the black lives matter moment being a racist hate group, which is causing unnecessary drama.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association had to apologize on behalf of his comments. The lack of black members on the committee threatened the integrity of the award show. Now the show is just considered to be a place that provides free booze and food to the people present there because of the bizarre nominations and predictable winners.

History Of Controversy At The Golden Globe Awards
The HFPA’s dirty secret came out in the open in the year 2021 when it was revealed the HFPA members take a bribe for films to get a nomination for awards. The members were richly wined and dined by the studios for them to get a nomination in the awards.
A very prominent case for the same was the Paramount Studio, which bought 30 members of the committee to Paris for a luxury trip with $1400 a night. The committee got exposed to have created a system of kickbacks and internal payments. The committee had a lot of unprofessional behavior regarding the film’s nominations.
The award show faced severe backlash from viewers in 2020 for nominating Asian films in the category “Best Foreign Language Film” but excluding them from the “Best Motion Pictures” category. The show has shown racism several times since it came into existence.
Berk, the former president of HFPA, was accused by actress Brenda Fraser of sexually assaulting her in 2003. Berk was forced to apologize, which he did half-heartedly. Berk has always been a controversial committee member.
Tom Cruise, the admirable actor from the Mission Impossible series, has returned his Golden Globe awards this year. Tom returned three of his previously won Golden Globe Awards after the committee responsible for giving nominations and awards was accused of lacking diversity and being racist.
