Dr. Phil Opens Up About Ending His Talk Show
Dr. Phil McGraw, renowned clinical psychologist and host of the daytime talk show “Dr. Phil,” has announced that the show will come to an end after its 21st season. McGraw expressed his gratitude for the incredible chapter that the show has been in his life and career, where he has been able to help thousands of people and millions of viewers with a range of issues, including addiction, abuse, marriage, mental wellness, and raising children.
The final episodes of “Dr. Phil” will air during the 2022-2023 television season, and original episodes will continue until then. McGraw, however, is not leaving the entertainment industry; instead, he plans to focus on prime-time programming and has announced a strategic prime-time partnership scheduled for release in 2024. McGraw’s aim is to engage with a broader audience and address his concerns for American families, working to restore core values and provide clarity.
McGraw’s first television appearance was on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in the late 1990s, marking his career as a TV personality. He debuted his own talk show, “Dr. Phil,” in September 2002, quickly becoming a hit, consistently ranking as the No. 1 or 2 talk show in its genre and receiving 31 Emmy nominations.
While the show “Dr. Phil” enjoyed immense popularity, it was not without controversy. In February 2022, current and former staffers of the show reported a toxic and traumatizing work environment in a BuzzFeed Interview. The allegations included claims of being yelled at by Carla Pennington, the executive producer, and experiencing emotional and mental distress due to how they were treated. Despite these allegations and challenges, the show continued to air and assist those in need.
Besides his talk show, McGraw has also ventured into producing, serving as an executive producer, writer, and co-creator for the CBS series “Bull.” In addition to that, he hosts podcasts such as “Phil in the Blanks” and “Mystery & Murder: Analysis by Dr. Phil,” which captivated millions of audiences.
According to a recent interview, McGraw shared his views on the decision to end his talk show. He expressed satisfaction with accomplishing what he primarily set out to do: discuss topics that are usually ignored and bring awareness to mental health and other stigmatized issues. McGraw stated that the show had a massive impact on pushing mental illness into the forefront of the American narrative.
“Dr. Phil” concludes its 21-season run, marking the end of an era in daytime television. The show’s success over the years and the impact it had on the viewers is profound. McGraw’s departure from daytime television opens the door to fresh opportunities for him to reach and connect with a broader audience.
