Encore of The Story of The Fault In Our Stars…
The story starts with a 16-years-old cancer-suffering girl named Hazel Grace, who has thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs. Due to her disease, she goes down into depression, which was realized by her mother. After knowing this, she started encouraging her to join a weekly cancer patient support group. There, she met a boy named Augustus “Gus” Waters, who was only there as a support system for his buddy Isaac, who was suffering from eye cancer.
Continuing with the plot of the story, in an introductory meeting at the support group center Hazel got to know that Augustus had lost his leg to bone cancer. They became friends, started sharing their individual interests, and agree to read each other’s favorite novels. Gus after knowing Hazel’s favorite book’s author initiated his first move to find Peter Van Houten resident.
Weeks later, Gus informs her that he has located Van Houten’s assistant, Lidewij, and has communicated with Van Houten via email. For instance, Van clarifies to Gus via email that he only meets his fans in person. After knowing this, Hazel got overjoyed and meanwhile, Gus presents Hazel with the plane tickets to Amsterdam, which he obtained through the Genie Foundation.
Moreover, when they hang out for quite some time with one another, Gus expresses his love for Hazel over a romantic dinner hosted by Van Houten. Following Van’s meetup, they then understood that he is only a mean alcohol drunker. The emails were actually sent by Lidewij, who set up the meeting without Van’s knowledge. This really hurts Hazel.
The Fault In Our Stars Ending Explained: Who died at the End, “Gus” or Hazel?
At the end of the story, when they get their meetup with Van, the next morning Gus informs Hazel that his cancer has returned back, and unfortunately, spread throughout his body. Knowing this, Hazel was heartbroken and she also started having problems with her respiratory system, which later got normal. Gus invites Hazel and his closest buddy, Isaac, for his “pre-funeral ceremony”, where they both have to speak and give “Gus” a tribute. Shockingly, after eight days later Augustus died and in his burial, Van also gave up his appearance. He then told Hazel that “Gus” himself told him to do that in front of her.
He hands over a piece of paper to her, which at first she throws out, but later collects when a talk with Isaac reveals that the paper was a letter from Gus, not Van Houten. In that particular letter, Gus revealed his feelings to Hazel and also said that “I enjoyed my decisions and I hope that you will also do that same as well”. By reading that Hazel got into tears and apparently looked up at the stars and concluded the movie by saying, “I do, Augustus, I do”.
