The Expendables 3 is the third installment in the Expendable series, and it came with more action. Sylvester Stallone and the team made sure that the locations used in the movie were as authentic as possible. Yes, The Expendables 3 is shot where it is set, and we will be talking all about that.
The movie starts with Barney Ross and the others being assigned to another task, but not before he rescues a team member who has been imprisoned for eight years.
After completing that, he leaves to complete the task—finding an arms dealer by the name of Mins—but when Barney spots the man, he knows him as Stonebanks, another member of the team who strayed and whom Barney believed he had dealt with. One of Barney’s men is then fatally wounded by him.
Later, a CIA agent named Drummer approaches Barney and says that he is looking for either Mins or Stonebanks. Barney chooses to break all links with his men and enlists the help of four young people to capture Stonebanks.
They capture him and are on their way. When they are bringing him back, his people strike them, and Barney escapes.
When Stonebanks calls him, he tells him to come get the group if he wants them back. Despite Barney’s willingness to go alone, his former squad decides to accompany him.
The Expendables 3 Filming Location
The action actor and former California governor, who promoted filmmaking in the state, went back to Bulgaria to film the third entry in the “Expendables” series.
Once more, the production took place at Nu Boyana Studios inside Sofia, taking full advantage of the non-union, inexpensive workforce in Bulgaria.
Since 2006, when Avi Lerner’s Los Angeles-based company Nu Image purchased the 75-acre old Communist-era film studio, it has become his preferred location in Eastern Europe.
The studio, which was once held by the government, now contains 13 sound stages, replicas of major Manhattan streets, and a fake ancient Rome, filled with a coliseum. Nu Image, a Millennium sister business, has invested tens of millions of dollars in upgrading the facility.
Verna, Bulgaria
Despite the lack of Hollywood endorsements, Bulgaria offers more than just ambiance and libations to those looking to film on location there. Even so, there are many wonderful things about filming in such a diverse environment.
Director Patrick Hughes strives for realism, whether filming in a studio or on location. In terms of practicality, Bulgaria has many things to offer its visitors. Varna was used for several of the street scenes.
Varna, the capital and third largest city of Bulgaria, remains by far the most appealing and international city on the Black Sea coast.
It is a charming destination to spend a few days, a blend of port city, naval base, and seaside resort, with a sizable park to stroll around and a long beach for lying down upon.
It is rich in history while being utterly modern. The best archaeological museum in Bulgaria and the biggest Roman bath complex are both located in the city center, together with a vibrant restaurant and cultural scene.
The star-studded cast stayed at the luxurious Riviera hotel complex located at the Golden Sands resort, located just north of the vibrant Black Sea city of Varna. The most lavish rooms at Riviera, the old State residence that is now a private beach resort, were reserved for months in advance.
The Bulgarian middleman responsible for all of the accommodations chose Riviera’s rebuilt “boutique” hotel, Oasis. However, only Dolph Lundgren and Terry Crews had reservations there because there weren’t many rooms available.
Sylvester Stallone, the film’s producer, and star, stayed in a blue and beige-painted penthouse at the complex’s Hotel Imperial for 300 euros a night. Jason Statham and Wesley Snipes also stayed in Imperial. The cast members had reservations for a week.
Fresh flowers, snacks, and chilled wine were provided in the luxurious rooms. There was 24-hour room service. The SPA and the gym were both open around the clock.
The historic shipyard in Varna, Bulgaria, where scenes from Somalia were to be filmed, served as the backdrop for the movie’s production.
