The Rebel Moon cast, directed by Zack Snyder, has expressed surprise at how long the upcoming director’s cuts for the two-part film are.
In an interview with TechRadar at the UK press conference for the Netflix release of Rebel Moon, Michiel Huisman and E. Duffy, who play Gunnar and Millius, respectively, expressed their surprise at finding a significant amount of extra material in the longer versions of the science fiction fantasy film.
Zack Snyder had previously stated that he wanted to push the boundaries of runtime with the Rebel Moon director’s cut.
Zack Snyder earlier revealed his desire to extend the footage
The well-liked director made hints in August that Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire, which will eventually be released in an R-rated version instead of a PG-13 one, will have an additional hour of footage. Considering that the latter only lasts two hours, the extended version of the film is anticipated to go over three hours.
Not only that, but Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver’s projected runtimes for both the PG-13 and R-rated versions are anticipated to be comparable to those of their predecessors. The director’s cut of The Scargiver is also anticipated to run for about three hours if this is accurate.
This implies that those who choose to see Rebel Moon’s Snyder cuts back-to-back will have to set aside a substantial six hours for the task. It’s a difficult task to watch both of the new Netflix films back-to-back on the well-known streaming service, and the cast members’ reactions—Huisman, Duffy, and Ray Fisher, who plays Darrian Bloodaxe—spoke volumes when they found out about the length of the extended cuts after Fisher revealed how much more footage there was.
Michiel Huisman and E. Duffy were amazed at the extended footage
Fisher clarified, “They’re going to be much more extensive.” “I mean, there’s an additional hour in the film [A Child of Fire], so just envision another 30% of the time where we really delve into who these characters are, their backstories, and the culture—”
“Wait, another hour?” Duffy interjected, asking, “Is that true?” after Huisman.
Duffy looked surprised at Fisher’s answer, and Huisman let out a short, shocked laugh. “Yeah, another hour—per part, I believe,” Fisher confirmed.
Putting up with protracted director’s cuts is nothing new for fans of Zack Snyder. With a duration of four hours and two minutes, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, an extended version of the 2017 DCEU film Justice League, debuted on Max (formerly HBO Max) in March 2021.
‘Rebel Moon, as a duology, will, however, go above and beyond that time frame. Therefore, plan your bathroom breaks and stock up on snacks in case you decide to binge-watch the R-rated versions of the films.
Rebel Moon got inspiration from Star Wars
Rebel Moon, initially influenced by Star Wars, experienced a major metamorphosis due to Eric Newman’s influence. When Newman joined the project, it was originally planned as a stand-alone movie, but with each planet serving as a season and episodes devoted to team building, the project became a television series.
The format of the TV series allowed for a deeper investigation of the mythology, which resulted in the development of a dieselpunk, Victorian-inspired story that was inevitably boiled down into two films for time reasons.
In Rebel Moon, Sofia Boutella plays Kora, a young woman with an enigmatic past who is sent on a mission to assemble warriors to protect her colony from the despotic Regent Balisarius.
This much-awaited science fiction epic gains depth from the ensemble cast, which includes Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, and Anthony Hopkins.
The phrase “A Child of Fire” has two meanings: it alludes to Princess Issa as well as Kora, the war orphan who represents the idea. “The Scargiver,” the sequel, centers on Kora’s story and promises an epic resolution entwined with Princess Issa’s destiny.
Snyder promises viewers that the titles capture the spirit and main idea of the story, which has been subtly developed over a long stretch of time, laying the groundwork for an exciting cinematic adventure.
