Dockery, who portrayed the character of Lady Mary Crawley in the popular period drama series, had been engaged before to John Dineen. Sadly, John passed away after battling a rare form of cancer back in 2015 at the young age of 34. Two years after his death, Dockery opened up about the devastating event two years after her fiance’s death. Michelle admitted that she doesn’t have the vocabulary to describe what it felt like as she had an extremely hard time facing it all.

While further saying how there were some similarities between her reel and real life, the actress admitted that she could feel the pain of a young widow. Dockery admitted that she never lost hope and further revealed how John never complained about it, which, in turn, gave them more strength. While the actress admitted that she learnt to see things differently after her loss, she further added that she had spent more time in hospitals that year than some people do in a lifetime.
