Matt Reeves has confirmed that the script for The Batman Part II is nearly finished. Speaking to SFX Magazine, he stated, “We’re finishing up the script now,” and added, “the plan is to shoot next year.” Despite Warner Bros. moving the release date from October 3, 2025, to October 2, 2026, fans can be reassured that production will start as planned.
Reeves also confirmed that Colin Farrell’s Penguin will be back in the sequel. This makes sense since the new HBO Max series The Penguin will lead directly into The Batman Part II. “There are details that actually connect right into the way the next movie begins,” Reeves said.
He added that the show will “hand the baton back to Batman,” as Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight tackles a new challenge. For the sequel’s plot, Reeves hints at a deeper look into Gotham’s web of corruption. He said:
“It’s going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places that he couldn’t anticipate in the first one.”
Reeves also mentioned that this story was hinted at in the first film, expanding the universe in a way fans haven’t seen before. “Batman is constantly battling these forces, but those forces can’t be entirely exorcised,” Reeves suggested.
Who Else Will Appear in The Batman Part II?
While Farrell’s Penguin is confirmed, it’s not clear if other popular characters like Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman or Andy Serkis’s Alfred will return for the sequel. Fans have expressed interest in seeing more villains, including supernatural ones like Gentleman Ghost. However, Reeves dismissed this idea, saying such villains do not fit with the realistic, gritty tone of his Gotham.
“We might push to the edge of the fantastical,” Reeves said, “but we would never go into full fantastical. It’s meant to feel quite grounded.” Although Reeves is not ready to introduce supernatural villains, he hasn’t completely ruled out characters that might be slightly fantastical.
With The Batman earning a notable $772 million worldwide, expectations are high for The Batman Part II. Warner Bros. will hope for similar success when the sequel releases in 2026.
Meanwhile, fans can look forward to The Penguin series starting on Max on September 19. This series will develop Farrell’s character and set up the next chapter in Reeves’ Bat-verse. You can also stream The Batman on Max in the meantime.
