A spinoff period series based around characters from popular author Charles Dickens’ novel, Oliver Twist, which came out first in 1838, is about to be dropped on Disney+. Created with the collective efforts of James McNamara, David Maher, and David Taylor, the show has confirmed the release of a total of eight episodes for now.
The show has brought together talent, including the likes of Thomas Brodie-Sanger, who plays the leading role of Jack Dawkins or the Artful Dodger, David Thewlis, Maia Mitchel, Damon Herriman, Miranda Tapsell, Susie Porter, Kym Gyngell, and many others to be a part of the show’s cast.
The Artful Dodger plans on taking fans back to the 1850s, somewhere in Australia, where our lead, Jack Dawkins works as a surgeon respected by those around him. But things change for him soon with the appearance of an old friend who ends up triggering Dawkins’ repressed thief within.
Turns out the surgeon was not all that respectable in the past when he used to spend his days pickpocketing people in London city and was known by the name, the Artful Dodger. The making of the show had been announced in 2022 and fans have been eagerly waiting for the show to drop ever since.
The trailer to the series was dropped on November 7th, 2023, and it has made many curious about how the story will unfold. Keeping up with Dickens’ writing and storytelling will not be a cake walk but the release of the trailer has made us keep our fingers crossed in hopes for an exciting show.
The Plot
The creators of the show have carved a new story with the original characters from the Dickens novel, reimagining a story with the pickpocket turned surgeon, Jack Dawkins. Leaving his dirty past behind, Dawkins has found a new life as a doctor in Australia, at the time a British colony.
Just as the man had found a good life for himself, new challenges get thrown his way as a group of familiar faces, a batch of convicts, step foot on the same land as him. These friends happen to have knowledge of Dawkins’ past when he was a pickpocketing thief, and this, obviously, is not good news.
Fearing that his past identity would be revealed to those around him, Dawkins is forced to reconnect with his past life of crime to deal with the sudden challenges being thrown his way. Getting caught neck-deep in old gambling debts, accusations of thievery and deception, there’s clearly more than one issue at hand for Jack.
