The British comedy panel game show Taskmaster was created by musician and comedian Alex Horne, and it is currently hosted by both Horne and Greg Davies. Five celebrities, mostly comedians, compete in the show to complete a series of tasks. Davies judges the work and assigns points based on the contestants’ performances, with Horne serving as the umpire for each task.
Horne first developed the idea for the show in 2010 for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He later signed a contract with Dave to adapt it for television, and the first episode debuted in 2015. After the ninth season in 2019, Channel 4 bought the show and ordered six new seasons to air over the ensuing three years.
A group of five contestants competes against one another in the humorous game show Taskmaster by finishing the tasks given to them. Most of the contestants are comedians, but occasionally other well-known television personalities show up. Each episode depicts the contestants working through a series of tasks under Horne’s supervision and occasionally with his help.
Following Taskmaster’s success on British television, countries like Belgium, Sweden, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Finland, New Zealand, Croatia, Portugal, and Quebec created their versions of the program. Taskmaster also inspired two books and a board game (as of 2022). For a series of tasks to be filmed in people’s homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, Horne hosted #HomeTasking. For each task, a YouTube montage of attempts was posted, with Davies giving points to his favorite submissions.
