Early Life
Daddy Michael and Mum Evelyn Braxton welcomed Tamar into the world on March 17 in Severn. The youngest of the six Braxton children, she spent her childhood in Severn, Maryland.
Evelyn was a vocalist, and her father, Michael, served as the pastor of the Braxton family church. Tamar and her siblings were given the love of singing that their mother had, and when Tamar was a young child, the Braxton kids were all accepted into the church chorus.
By the time Tamar was 12 years old, she had joined the sisters Toni, Traci, Towanda, and Trina in signing with Arista Records. The siblings had created a five-person sibling group when they were in their teens.
Achievements
The five sisters collaborated on one album, “Good Life,” which peaked at number 78 on the Billboard R&B charts in 1990. The label attempted to further promote the group after the single failed to gain traction, but they, too, were unsuccessful.
The group that featured Toni Braxton, who was in her twenties, and Tamar Braxton, who was just 12 years old, was later dropped as the label struggled to promote it to the same demographic.
Soon after, Toni was contracted by LaFace, and Tamar and her sisters joined Toni’s backing vocalists. The surviving Braxtons, excluding Toni and Traci, subsequently got a deal with Atlantic and issued the mediocrely successful album So Many Ways in 1996.
As Toni’s career was starting to take off, Tamar and her sisters encouraged her development and even accompanied Toni on her solo tour. Tamar obtained a deal with DreamWorks Records to start her solo career, and in 2000, she released her self-titled album.
The number-one single from the album, “If You Don’t Wanna Love Me,” peaked at number 30 on the R&B chart. Despite favorable reviews for the album, Tamar joined Casablanca and continued to perform background vocals on Toni’s albums.
But until she started portraying herself in a reality series called Braxton Family Values, her career didn’t really take off. The Braxton sisters’ antics were tracked on the reality show.
She then released her second solo record a few years later. Then 2013’s Love and War LP marked Braxton’s commercial breakthrough. It made its debut in the US, where it sold 500,000 copies.
