After keeping its fans in the dark for so long, Sword Art Online has announced its return with its new movie, which is said to be in production right now. SAO fans are thrilled with this announcement, as they were looking forward to its sequel.
The last adaptation we got from SAO was Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night (movie), which was released in 2022. However, that didn’t perform well in theaters, so fans are also sensitive about this news for a new movie to be in production.

Sword Art Online New Movie in Production
The new movie of Sword Art Online, which is being said to be in production right out, will be the third part of its movie series. SWORD ART ONLINE: PROGRESSIVE MOVIE.
We already have two parts, Sword Art Online: Progressive Movie – HOSHI NAKI YORU NO ARIA (part 1) & Sword Art Online: Progressive Movie – KURAKI YUUYAMI NO SCHERZO (part 2).
So, this new movie is going to be the sequel to this Progressive Movie series. While this movie series of Sword Art Online is said to be non-canon, you can still watch it as it is being adapted from its light novel, which is written by the original writer of Sword Art Online.
After the release of Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night (movie) in 2022, fans were looking forward to its new season as the last canon episode was released back in 2020.

Is Sword Art Online’s New Movie going to Canon?
As I said earlier, this movie is going to be the third part of Sword Art Online: Progressive Movie Series, and its story will be adapted from its light novel. So, even though it won’t be the continuation of it anime series, you can still watch it as it will tell you more about the SAO’s story from a different perspective.
The story will be of around season 1, and it continue from where it left off in Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night. So, now it is up to you to decide whether you are going to watch this movie or not.
Can Sword Art Online’s New Movie Change Fans Expectations
After the release of Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night, SAO fans are sensitive about its next part since the previous movie kind of disappointed them. Many fans still think that they should release Progressive as an anime series rather than a movie, as it’s being messed up.
Some fans think that they should be making a movie about Moon Cradle, which is of two volumes, and it also sets up the part of what’s going to be in the next main arc, Unital Ring.
Since it is already tagged as a non-canon, as it is not directly connected to the main storyline, many fans are going to skip it. However, if they executed it properly with good animation and storyline, it could change fans’ expectations and bring them to the theater. So, let’s wait and see if they will be successful in it.
What fans really wanted was season 4 of Sword Art Online, which may have started the final arc of the anime, but it seems like we will have to wait for a little for it.
I think that maybe after 3-4 years, we may get a new season of Sword Art Online, which is quite long if you ask me, but we can’t do anything about it. So, let’s be happy with what we are getting instead of criticizing it,
