Suzume no Tojimari Story
At the young age of four, Suzume lived through the devastating Great East Japan earthquake that occurred in real life on March 11, 2011. In her search for her mother, who was working at a hospital during the disaster and hadn’t returned, Suzume stumbled upon a doorway to the afterlife.
Since then, the afterlife has been visiting her in her dreams. Fast forward to 17 years, Suzume now lives in Kyushu, where she meets Sota, who possesses the ability to lock the door to the afterlife.
Suzume learns that if this door isn’t locked, it could trigger a catastrophic earthquake. She decides to assist Sota in his quest. The mysterious feline, Daijin, intervenes and transforms Sota into a chair, thus beginning their journey to lock the door.
When the worm tries to come out of the afterlife into this world through a door, the door locker secures the door and returns the land to its original Guardian Spirit, Ubusunagami, to prevent it from escaping.
Ubusunagami is a Shinto concept that represents a deity that protects and watches over the land, providing protection to those born there from before birth until after death. Simply put, locking the door means preventing evil beings from coming out of it from the afterlife.
This is a specialized skill that only adores locker with knowledge like Sota can perform. The door locker is a fictional occupation and does not actually exist in Japan. However, Shinkai sensei has stated that he was inspired to create this profession based on the traditional Japanese ritual called Jinchinsai.
Jinchinsai is a ritual in the construction industry, where people pray for the safety of a new construction project by worshiping the deity of the lamb before starting the foundation work. Instead of praying at the start of construction, a door locker Mourns and prays for the forgotten land.
The door in the story is a portal that connects the world of the living with the world of the dead known as the afterlife. Usually, the door doesn’t open because people’s attachments and thoughts are suppressing the land this belief comes from the Japanese belief in Shinto, where deities and people are believed to have an interdependent relationship.
People worship the deities who protect them, and in return, the deities make sacrifices for the people. Japanese people believe that the land is inhabited by Ubusunagami. When Sota says that people’s hearts lose their weight, he means that people have lost their respect for the Ubusunagami and their attachment to the land.
When this happens, the door opens, and disaster strikes. In this story, the door opens in various places, such as an abandoned resort facility in Kyushu, and a junior high school swallowed by Earth and sand in Shikoku.
A ruined amusement park in Kinky the ruins of a castle beneath Tokyo, and the Imperial Palace at the site of the Great East Japan earthquake. In Tohoku, the door is a passage to the afterlife, and in the afterlife, there exists a dangerous entity known as the worm, which can cause disasters.
If the door is opened the worm will appear in the mortal world causing catastrophic events, therefore, Suzume and Sota must travel across Japan to lock the doors and prevent the worm from escaping into the mortal world. The afterlife in this world plays a crucial role in this story.
