Vice TV’s most nostalgic show yet, Super Maximum Retro Show, will be releasing a new episode soon. Hosted by Chris Distefano, the show features all kinds of interesting things that were seen back in the ’70s, ’80s, and the ’90s.
The series premiered earlier this month on March 17th, 2023. It is said to be produced by Jimmy Kimmel, the Brooklyn-born television host who’s known for his talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and many others. Each episode of Super Maximum Retro Show usually begins with Chris introducing the guests of the night, who are celebrities from the music as well as other industries.
Until now, the show has had guests like Hasan Minhaj, Mike Canon, Adam Pally, Roy Wood Jr., Napoleon Emil, and Ricky Cobb. With all the guests at his set, he brings out advertisements, toys, and photographs from the 20th century, which would have gone viral if they were to come out in the present times where TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter exist.
Blasts from the past, like awkward sneaker ads, celebrity mugshots, terrible wrestlers, and strange NFL videos, have been included on the Retro show. This season is set to have around nine episodes, with the last few featuring the movie Gladiator and The Care Bears.
Super Maximum Retro Show: Recap of Previous Episodes
In the previous episode, we see Chris Distefano introducing the guests of the night, which included Chris Redd, Matteo Lane, and Yamaneika Saunders. Chris talks about the impact that music videos used to have back in the day. Being in a music video meant you were a significant figure in the industry and granted the person a high status in the entertainment world.
They have a look at the Super Bowl Shuffle from 1983 that was performed by Chicago Bears. Chris Redd thinks the video is good as it represents a time when Chicago Bears were still great. They analyze the video and see that the choreography is awkward and off. They then have a look at a 1988 Philadelphia Eagles video where athletes were brought in to sing a song, although they never did anything like that before.
Yamaneika explains how producers from back then should have used sports terminology to help the athletes understand their dance moves well enough. Next up was the Seattle Seahawks from 1983, where a player comes out of smoke playing the saxophone.
After the break, Matteo talks about the time he met Mariah Carey in an elevator and had a good experience. They then have a look at the craziest pictures from history, out of which the first one was of Michael Jackson and Steven Tyler at the Beatle Mania Party in 1977. The next photograph dates back to 1996 and has KISS and Tupac posing for a picture together while they presented an award together.
When a Mr. Rogers and The Incredible Hulk photo from 1980 comes up, Matteo guesses that Hulk could have been on steroids. Another photograph they see is of Farah Fawcett and Joe Namath in 1981 while they were filming for a Shampoo commercial. They judge Joe’s acting skills.

After the photographs come the Toys part of the night, where Chris talks about old clickbait toys that appeared great on television, but once they reached home, they would look nothing like they did on TV. He shows the He-Man Kobra Kahn commercial from 1984, which shows a figurine that would simply just spray water. Chris then brings out the Mommy Secret Surprise barbie and the Tarzan figurine that only screams.
