Stephen King’s horror classic “It” has profoundly influenced pop culture. In the 1990s, a three-part miniseries brought the story to life, featuring Tim Curry’s unforgettable performance as Pennywise, the iconic clown.
However, it wasn’t until 2017 that a full-fledged film adaptation would grace the silver screen.
Directed by Andrés Muschietti, the movie starred Bill Skarsgård as the chilling clown terrorizing the fictional town of Derry, Maine. “It” became a box office sensation, grossing over $700 million globally, solidifying its place as the highest-grossing Stephen King adaptation to date.
Pennywise in the ‘It: Chapter Two’ (New Line Cinema)Following the success, It Chapter Two, released in 2019, continued the story with impressive box office results. Three years later, reports surfaced about Max turning the franchise into a prequel series. A year later, the series was officially greenlit and has been actively developed since.
Welcome to Derry will star Madeleine Stowe, Stephen Rider, Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, and James Remar. Deadline announced that Skarsgård will return as Pennywise, reuniting with the Muschietti siblings who directed both films. Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane will co-showrun Welcome to Derry.
Skarsgård, known for his ventures into horror, will appear in 2022’s Barbarian and the upcoming Nosferatu adaptation alongside Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily Rose-Depp, and Nicholas Hoult. He will also feature in The Crow reimagining, which is slated for release in August.
The Muschiettis, recalling their childhood experiences reading King’s It, expressed their excitement about bringing the novel’s depth to their new series. King himself also shared his enthusiasm for the continuation of Derry’s haunting tale, led by Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti.
