The classic game show from the 70s, Split Second, is going to be making a comeback after almost 36 years, with John Michael Higgins as host and a fresh format tailored to make the game more entertaining than it has ever been before. Known for its interesting collection of Game shows, this time, the production for this series was taken up by Game Show Network.
First seen on television on March 20th, 1972, Split Second is a trivia game series that is unique in the way it offers contestants questions that usually have three right answers to them. Through two main rounds and a countdown round, the contestants are allowed to collect as many points/money as they can to win the game of the day. The three players will have to use a buzzer to get their chance right after the question has been revealed.
Produced by Monty Hall and Stefan Hatos, the series became the buzz in the game show of the world when it was first released. It even had a special Canadian version introduced due to the popularity of the show at that time. The final season was aired in the year 1987, and Split Second remained one of the best shows from the 70s-80s. It was in November of 2022 that GSN would be taking the game show’s revival upon itself.
Split Second: Format of The Show
The game starts with the contestants lining up in their places, and the host presents the question, which would have three blanks for each right answer. Clues are given to make the guessing work easier. Whoever uses their buzzer first will be allowed to try and answer the question. If their answer is right, it’s added to the blanks, but if their answer is wrong, their chance is withdrawn, and the others are allowed to convey their answers.
Previous versions used to have a sort of lock system that would block out the contestant that uses the buzzer before its supports be used. The correct answers are rewarded with points or money. The current version will allot 25 points to each player if all of them are right, 50 to each if only two are right, and 100 if only one player is right. These are the scores for the first round, and the second round will have 50,100, and 200 points for each case.
Countdown Round:
This round is usually seen at the end of the episode and involves a countdown where the contestants can answer as many times as they like. The first one to press the buzzer is allowed to go first, and they can give two or three answers for each question. If they end up saying the wrong one in the middle, their chance is taken away, and others are allowed to put their answers in the blanks.
The contestant who had the highest number of points before the round will have to give 4 right answers, while the middle-scored contestant would have to come up with 6 right answers, with the lowest score being 8. The previous versions of Split Second used to have a special Car Prize or Vacation round, but that won’t be seen in the newest version of the game.
The 2023 version will instead have a 60-second round, where the champion will have to answer almost 7 seven questions in a limited period. The questions had two possibly right outcomes, but the contestant could win by answering only once as well. If they manage to answer all of the 7 questions right in a row, they get the chance to win a whopping $10,000 as a prize.
