Vinland Saga, based on Makoto Yukimura's historical manga

Fans waiting for Vinland Saga Season 3 have received a disappointing update from creator Makoto Yukimura. The acclaimed historical anime has not received a confirmed continuation, and Yukimura has now directly addressed questions about the project’s status.

Responding to a fan on X who asked about the third season, Yukimura wrote,

“Sorry my friend, I have no good news about that. The project is not currently in progress.”

His response suggests that fans should not expect an immediate return for the anime, although it does not establish that Season 3 has been canceled permanently.

The update comes after the second season concluded in 2023, leaving Thorfinn’s story ready to move into its next chapter. Neither the manga’s publisher, Kodansha, nor animation studio MAPPA has announced a production schedule for the continuation in the information provided by the original report.

WHY VINLAND SAGA SEASON 3 REMAINS UNCONFIRMED

The delay is particularly disappointing because the second season ended in June 2023, leaving viewers eager to see Thorfinn continue his journey toward a peaceful life. The first season, animated by WIT Studio, premiered in 2019, while MAPPA handled animation production for the second season.

Season 3 has never received a formal production announcement. Although fans previously interpreted promotional artwork featuring the Roman numeral III as a hint about a continuation, it was not an official confirmation.

The manga also concluded its serialization in July 2025, meaning the completed story provides material for a potential continuation. However, having sufficient source material does not guarantee that an anime sequel will enter production.

Yukimura’s response confirms that the project is not currently moving forward, but it should not be interpreted as a permanent cancellation. No release date, production schedule, or returning animation studio has been announced for the third season.

The creator’s latest comments also do not identify a specific reason for the delay. Without confirmation from the production committee or animation studio, attributing the situation to MAPPA’s workload or other production challenges would be speculation.

For now, fans can revisit the first two seasons while waiting for further announcements. The story’s next chapter remains a possibility, but Yukimura’s update makes one thing clear: Vinland Saga Season 3 is not currently in progress, and there is no confirmed timeline for its return.
