The origins of Sonic the Hedgehog were fueled by an ambitious goal that went beyond competing with other video game mascots. According to Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka, SEGA’s developers wanted to create an entertainment brand capable of surpassing Disney when they introduced Sonic in the early 1990s.
Speaking in an interview with Crunchyroll, Iizuka reflected on the passion that shaped Sonic’s creation and explained that the team’s aspirations continue to influence the franchise decades later.
Takashi Iizuka says Disney inspired Sonic’s creators
Looking back on Sonic’s early development during the Sega Genesis era, Iizuka said the development team’s mindset was remarkably ambitious.
“Back when they were making Sonic originally on the Genesis, the passion inside of the team… was they wanted to beat Disney,”
Iizuka told Crunchyroll. He added that the developers wanted to create
“content that was gonna be far above and beyond what Disney was doing.”

Although he acknowledged Disney’s continued influence in global entertainment, Iizuka said SEGA still sees the company as the benchmark to chase.
“Disney is amazing… That’s probably the goal that we’re going to keep aspiring to… We want to take out number one, because they are so good and so up there.”
Iizuka’s comments highlight how Sonic has evolved from a console mascot into one of gaming’s most recognizable entertainment brands. Since debuting in 1991, the franchise has expanded into animated series, blockbuster films, comics, and merchandise while remaining one of SEGA’s flagship properties.
His remarks also echo comments previously made by Nintendo creator Shigeru Miyamoto, who said in a 2023 interview that he felt honored when Nintendo was compared with Disney, reflecting how both Japanese gaming giants view the entertainment company as a standard for global brand recognition.
