Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka has opened up about the growing pressure surrounding the series as recent games continue to receive more resources and stronger reviews. While Sonic struggled with inconsistent reception during earlier periods, Iizuka says the franchise’s improved position has created a new challenge: maintaining high Metacritic scores with every major release.

In an interview with Automaton Media, Iizuka explained that increased investment has played a major role in improving the quality of recent Sonic games. However, that additional support has also raised expectations from both players and the development team.

MORE RESOURCES HAVE CHANGED SONIC’S DEVELOPMENT

According to Iizuka, Sonic games previously had to work with significantly smaller budgets and fewer development resources when the franchise was struggling. That limitation affected how much polish teams could give individual projects.

“The biggest factor is the resources we can allocate to them,”

Iizuka said. He explained that expectations for Sonic have now increased alongside the resources available to development teams, allowing the studio to spend more time and effort refining its games.

The larger teams have also created a stronger internal support structure. If a project risks missing its deadline, staff from other parts of Sonic Team can reportedly assist, allowing developers to maintain quality while staying on schedule.

Iizuka said this system puts the team in a position where it can “properly deliver high-quality games to users.” However, having more resources does not necessarily make development easier because the expectations attached to each release have increased as well.

SONIC TEAM IS NOW UNDER PRESSURE TO MAINTAIN HIGH SCORES

The growing commercial strength of Sonic has added another layer to that pressure. Iizuka noted that selling one million copies is now almost expected for the franchise, meaning critical reception has become another important benchmark for the team.

“We can’t afford to let our Metacritic scores drop, either,”

Iizuka said. He added that there is now greater pressure to create games capable of achieving high review scores, creating a difficult balance between different priorities during development.

This marks a significant shift from the period when Sonic struggled to maintain consistent quality. The franchise now has games, movies, and other projects contributing to its wider momentum, but that success means future Sonic releases face greater expectations.

Iizuka summarized the situation by acknowledging that

“game development is tough because it involves both kinds of struggles.”

For Sonic Team, having more resources has helped address some of the problems that affected older releases, but it has also raised the bar for what players expect from the next game.
