Somebody Somewhere —an AFI Award-winner for TV Program of the Year in 2023 and 2022 Gotham Award nominee for Breakthrough Series— is back for its sophomore season on HBO, promising another run of laughs, tears, love, and loss in a small town in the central USA from the hands of its creators Paul Thureen and Hannah Bos. With great scriptwriting, engaging character development, and tones of self-love and acceptance, this short-format-length comedy serial will bring us back a group of social outcasts trying to live life as the round pegs in the square holes.
The comedy starring Bridget Everett in the main role of Sam opposite Jeff Hiller in the role of Joel will continue to tell a story of adaptation and in-group cohesion through the multiple challenges of life which are relatable to many Generation Xers (the main target of the show). Still, the topic of accepting oneself is one that relates to every generation, and regardless of how old you are, you’re likely to enjoy this warm HBO comedy.
What To Expect From Somebody Somewhere Season 2?

What Happened In Somebody Somewhere Season 1?
If you haven’t seen this series’ debut season, go to HBO Max and watch it! Because you’re in for some laughs as you get ready for this weekend’s premiere. In the first season, we meet all the main characters; there’s Sam, an obese middle-aged woman who’s having social anxiety issues after her sister’s passing and the troubled past she has with her mom and sister.
Sam’s mom is a relapsed alcoholic, and they don’t get along so well. It’s at this point that the series presents us with another character, a nerdy dude named Joel, whom Sam befriends, and later Joel integrates into his circle of friends, spawning a friendship that’s the core of the series’ story arc.
When Sam meets Joel’s buddies, it’s a warm and fuzzy nerd reunion. Sam opens up to the group, tells them about her insecurities, and motivates each other to deal with life’s problems. As the story progresses, Sam finds it in her to start singing and face life with a better attitude. All the while, her troubles with her family become the knot in the plotline because Sam’s mom had to go into rehab, and Sam’s dad has a lot of trouble getting his finances right.
